Every team composed of leaders and players. There are many factors to consider that determine the chemistry and efficiency of a team comprised of different individuals, with each player playing a specific role that will shape and determine the success of a season and morale in the locker room. The Oakland Raiders have as unique of a roster as any team in the NFL on this season, one that is composed of fresh faces from all corners of the football world. Scrolling through the Raiders roster, one can easily note the large disparity between the number of young players and veterans with a great deal of experience. With long-time veteran players like SS Donovin Darius, DT Warren Sapp and C Jeremy Newberry, this Raider squad is full of players with proven NFL track records and knowledge, to impart on younger players like rookie DE Jay Richardson. The result of such exceptional circumstance has resulted in a unique opportunity for the transference of strategy, technique and experience, all of which is taking place in Alameda, California at the Raider Training Camp.

Donovin Darius has experienced his fair share of training camps, entering his 10th NFL season. However, judging by the veteran’s philosophy, you would never be able to tell he started training a decade ago. Darius believes, “You work hard in the off-season to put yourself in a good position, with a fresh approach and fresh teams so you come into it sort of like a rookie, around new people and new things.” Having worked with over 17 teammates in his position over the years, Darius appreciates the importance of guiding younger players and is aware it is his time to return the favor. “I understand these guys just want to be successful and they are willing to do whatever they have to do and sometimes if you could just channel that energy and give them tips, it really goes a long way,” Darius said. Despite the different roles of rookie or veteran, Darius always remembers an important foundation of professional football, “Age doesn’t matter in this business, it’s all about execution.”

Also in his 10th year is Jeremy Newberry who entered Training Camp with a very open attitude that stresses a great deal of importance on the educational process. Newberry feels that training camp, “[Is an opportunity] to pick out something to work on, something you want to get to do better. It’s not just about learning the plays, you just have to pick something you want to work on each year and get it done.” In relation to his role as a mentor on the team, Newberry, “[Focuses] mostly on the offensive line. They ask me to watch their reps and I have played about every position on the line so I try to help them with pass sets and also just a general knowledge of the game.” Other than a verbal or hands on approach, he admits that the most effective learning often goes unspoken. Citing admiration for his role model, the retired Ray Brown, Newberry said, “It wasn’t so much him telling me what to do all the time but more trying to emulate yourself around his play. He was very experienced when I met him so I tried to look at his playing habits and techniques and simply copy it.”

Jay Richardson as drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round of the 2007 draft is quickly learning the ropes of performing at a higher level of play. A great deal of his maturation process is dependent on the experienced players around him whose wisdom is priceless. Often observing and modeling himself after more experienced players, Richardson notes he is learning, “A lot of little things, tips and tricks that I never would have thought about otherwise.” Recognizing the larger picture of being in the NFL, Richardson said, “Looking at Burge (Derrick Burgess) and (Warren) Sapp really shows you more than anything how to be professional, how to handle yourself and carry yourself other than just playing football.” It seems obvious that Richardson is acting like a sponge and really soaking in the most of his surroundings in an attempt to improve himself as a player and professional.

Another interesting story from The Oakland Raiders’ locker room emerges, as the sun sets each day in Alameda, California. Just as each complete puzzle has its pieces, any sports team must have its different roles defined and working well. This year, for the Oakland Raiders, such a process entails the passage of knowledge and experience to ensure that future generations of football players learn the ways of those who played before them. The roles of every member of the team are indeed important for the team as a whole.
