The player personnel scout Bruce Kebric was assistant general manager and director of player personnel for Arizona of the USFL and Quality control coach/defense George Martinez was an assistant for the team of Cardinals from 1994-95. In addition, Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt, Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach Russ Grimm, Special Teams Coach Kevin Spencer and Raiders Defensive Backs Coach Darren Perry were all coaching assistants for Pittsburgh from 2003-2006. Cardinals Special Teams Coach Kevin Spencer was a Raiders assistant from 1995-97. Cardinals DE Chris Cooper played for the Raiders from 2001-2003. Cardinals Defensive Backs Coach Teryl Austin coached Raider S Donovin Darius at Syracuse and T Elliot Vellejo played at the University of Cal-Davis, RB Roshon Vercher played at Fresno State. The aforementioned are just some of the connections of both teams.

The Oakland Raiders led the NFL in pass defense for the first time in the 2006, since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 and marked the first time they’ve led the AFC since 1998. The defense held opponents to a mere 150.8 yards per game through the air while intercepting 18 passes. The club set a franchise record for fewest net passing yards allowed in a single game with a minus five net yards allowed performance against the Houston Texans on December 3. The 2006 team set a franchise record for the lowest passing yards per game allowed in a 16-game season while posting the sixth best total in franchise history.

Moreover, the Oakland Raiders finished 2006 third in the NFL in total defense. The Silver and Black allowed 284.8 yards per game. The team finished number one overall in pass defense and compiled 34 sacks while forcing 24 turnovers and scoring four touchdowns. 2006 marks the third time in franchise history that the Raiders have finished in the top three for total defense (1973: 2nd, 1975: 3rd) since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 and the first time they’ve finished number one in pass defense.
