Sailors Visit Raiders Facility
On a Monday evening, the USS Mobile Bay docked in San Francisco. There were eleven sailors who made their first stop on shore leave at the Raiders Alameda, California facility on Tuesday morning. Being at sea for weeks at a time makes shore leave something every sailor anticipates. Liberty ashore kicked off with a bang, for these sailors. Electronics Technician First Class Tyson Porter was hooked on the Oakland Raiders after his first weekend watching football. He watched one NFL game but was dissatisfied, according to Tyson Porter. The second game that weekend was a Raiders game. “I was hooked man,” Porter said. The Vallejo-native learned of the ship’s liberty in San Francisco three weeks ago. “I was thinking, ‘How cool would it be to visit the Raiders? Let’s make this happen,’” he added. Two weeks of phone calls and faxes resulted in eleven sailors getting a tour of the facility, meeting with Oakland Raiders staff, and a chance to walk the practice fields. In addition, senior administrator Artie Gigantino addressed the sailors, being grateful to them for their service to our country, and answered questions about the team. The tour moved to the meeting rooms and the equipment room. Equipment assistant Wale Adefela provided the group a glimpse into the world of an equipment manager. The sailors looked at the stacks of face masks and helmets in wonder. Adefela even invited some to join in the day’s laundry duties but was politely declined. The unit toured the locker room, where they laughed at some of the things hanging in the player’s lockers and took pictures in front of some of their favorite players’ lockers. They were also presented with the team of Raiders hats, a gift from the organization as an token of gratitude for their service to our country.
Meanwhile, on the practice field, the sailors imitated their favorite players by pretending to throw or catch passes and lining up in a three-point stance, preparing to rush the quarterback. After many pictures and good natured ribbing, the tour moved to the Oakland Raiders weight room. Strength and conditioning assistant Chris Pearson talked to the group regarding the different machines the team possess and the proper use of some of them. Head Trainer H. Rod Martin spoke to the group in the training room. He even let the sailors in on some of the low-tech rehab devices the Raiders employ. And as Martin spoke, FS Stuart Schweigert joined the tour and took a moment to speak to the group, expressing hopefulness and confidence for the 2007 season. He also signed autographs for the sailors and posed for pictures.
Fire Control Third Class Ryan Lumas is a huge Oakland Raiders fan. Ryan jumped at the chance to tour the Raiders facility. “My father’s a Raiders fan. My first game in person was a Raiders game. It was a wonderful experience,” explained Loomis. “[Being a Raiders fan] is a family tradition. I helped get everybody together for this. I made sure I spread the word to all the Raider fans I knew. Not just through e-mail but verbally also. And here we are. I love it. There are a lot of Raiders fans in my family. They’re going to be happy just seeing me in the facility.”
Furthermore, the final stop of the tour was the studio for the Raiders three television shows. Director of broadcasting Chris Gargano spoke to them about what the broadcast department does for the Oakland Raiders. The sailors were invited to pose for pictures as hosts on the set. The group posed for one last group photo with Martin in front of the facility. Everyone was all smiles and delighted as they made their way to their van for the ride back to the Mobile Bay. These eleven sailors know the Raider Nation is with them every step of the way, though their destination and length of deployment is classified.
Both sailors and the Raiders were pleased of the happenings of the day. Everybody enjoyed the visit and the Raiders were also delighted of the outcome; that the sailors will remember this unforgettable experience that will serve as the Raiders’ inspiration to move on, move forward and fight for the victory.
