The Beginning of O'Neal's Journey
Rookie FB Oren O’Neal had a long journey before reaching National Football League. O’Neal underwent life-saving surgery before going to college and the Arkansas State University coaching staff that told him to work hard and do everything that was asked of him to earn a starting job, was let go. As he finally began touching the football as a running back, he partially tore his MCL, sidelining him for three games. When he was in high school, O’Neal was undersized for both the offensive line and as a linebacker. The coach at Arkansas State, who knew his junior high school coach, recognized his potentials but without a scholarship to offer, he recommended O’Neal step on. The agreement for a scholarship was, he had to work hard and do everything necessary to help the team. Unfortunately, he acquired a breathing problem before the opportunity to show his talents.
O’Neal lost a lot of weight and a year of football as his doctors diagnosed a chest problem. He started to return the following season, focusing on bulking up and earning a scholarship. But during his time away from football, the coaching staff that had promised him a roster spot was replaced. O’Neal continued in his journey, without fear. O’Neal finally earned his roster spot on the team as the starting fullback. He earned CBS Sportsline.com National Walk-On of the Year honors. He successfully petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility. Though he played four years, he was fruitful during his six-year stay at Arkansas State, earning two Bachelor’s degrees. “I was happy but I wasn’t relieved. The accomplishments are nice, but I’m never satisfied. This is another step to where I want to be. You always have to work hard,” he answered as someone once congratulated him on what he’s achieved to date.
The key to O’Neal’s hard work and determination is his faith. The father of O’Neal is a pastor at home in Stuttgart, Arkansas. His inspiration comes from his faith and religion for the hard times he went through. He believed that he can surpass any trials along the way. “Everything I’ve had to go through to get to this point, I would not be able to go through without my faith in God,” O’Neal said. “It seems like every time I took one step forward, something would knock me back half a step.” His faith was his strength and what drives his hopes of making the 53-man roster. He knows roster spots are limited. He wants to stand out on special teams. It was the beginning of O’Neal’s journey in the world of professional football. His faith reminds him the success he will achieve is not because of what he has accomplished. O’Neal knows the accomplishment he has is designed to put him in a position to help others to become successful. Oren O’Neal, as being a sixth round selection of the Oakland Raiders in the 2007 NFL Draft, has a strong courage and believes that there’s a lot in store for him as an aspiring football player.
