Raiders Support Troops
It was a tradition for the Oakland Raiders to visit military bases both in the United States and abroad. The team is composed of both the players and the Raiderettes in an endeavor to boost morale and express their deepest gratitude to the troops and their families for their heroic hard works. The Raiders recently provided some “morale boosters” to members of the Raider Nation who are stationed at military bases by sending care packages to service members in Germany. This was just the latest effort by the Silver and Black to thank and encourage our troops and their families, both at home and abroad. Raiders Chief Executive Amy Trask said, “It is our honor and privilege to support and thank our service men and women for their service to our Country and for the sacrifices that they and their families make for all of us.”
In addition to this, the Oakland Raiders have made it possible for local companies as well as individuals to support our troops and their families by making it possible for service men and women and their families to attend the team’s home games in what promises up to be an exciting, challenging 2007 NFL season. In fact, the team has instituted a program named Tickets for Troops, which allows companies or individuals to make difference in the lives of American troops as well as their families. The Raiders have coordinated with local United States military bases to help our troops and their families attend a Raiders game live. Those who participate in the Tickets for Troops program not only support our military, but also demonstrate the true heart and spirit of the Raider Nation. In addition, a variety of sponsorship packages are offered that includes tickets to future games, as well as autographed memorabilia, on-field access for the Raiders Tickets for Troops Presentation and even the website of the Raiders. Just last month, the Raiders greeted service members, some of whom were about to be deployed to Iraq and others who had just returned from service in the Middle East. On a recent morning, 13 service members including 11 Army National Guard, one Marine Reservist, and one Air National Guard airman, who drove from Reno to Alameda for a guided tour and a meet-and-greet with players and staff. Earlier this year, Raider Legends Greg Bierkert and Steve Wisniewski together with four member of the team’s cheerleading squad—the Raiderettes —spent a week supporting U.S. service men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq. The event marked the third year in a row the Raiderettes have participated in an overseas appearance having gone to Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia two years ago, Japan and Korea last year, and now the Middle East.
It was indeed a great honor for the Oakland Raiders and a great time for the troops as well. After all, being a part of a sports group means having great responsibilities as well as excellent opportunities to share what they have not just as professional players but as a role models as well.
