Raiders Getting Ready
The voluntary three-day Mini-Camp of the team of the Oakland Raiders ended Wednesday. Others prefer to go home and rest while others will take a vacation with their families.
Head Coach Lane Kiffin was delighted with the pace of practice and the progress to date. “[We’re] extremely pleased, especially with team progress as far as them doing what we’ve asked them to do and them putting in the time and coming back every day,” Kiffin stated. “We ask a lot of them. We ask of them an extremely high tempo at practice. [There are] no complaints and they just jump right in and keep doing it.” The span of time between now and Training Camp is great for both coaches and players as it allows them to have a chance to regain their strength before the pressure of a 16-game National Football League season starts.
Coach Lane Kiffin even addressed the team of the changes between each and every player. He even said, “We talked about a number of things today in the team meeting. One of the main things was that a number of individuals have made a lot of strides from the day we got here.” He continued, “We made some early evaluations, maybe our first couple of days on the field and asked them, ‘We need you to do this, we need you to change this, or we need you to lose weight. Whatever we need to get better.’ There’s case after case of guys doing that.” The first year head coach was also impressed with the Raiders’ adoption of the competition theme the coaches have used throughout every practice. The players are buying into the new system, the competition for roster spots has challenged everyone. “We learned they [the players] are willing to compete. They’re willing to practice the way we want to practice,” Coach Kiffin stated. “They’re willing to put in the time and effort, things we need them to do. We came out of this thing with great results as far as the way they have accepted the things we need them do.”
The most experienced of the quarterbacks on the roster is QB Josh McCown. He’s seen a number of different teams in camp in his five years in the league. “When I first got here, it was kind of a young group; you didn’t know how serious they were. But you get on the field and everyone knows what they are doing, where they are supposed to go. It’s impressive,” McCown revealed. For the next few weeks after the Mini-Camp, players will spend time with their families and love ones. The players brought the things that they acquired from the camp. Though each player’s destination is different, everyone will continue training, preparing for Training Camp. The 2007 Oakland Raiders will start its journey six weeks from now, as a determined, fighting and strong team driven with great qualities that a professional football player needs. Furthermore, the team will continue to become better players with great enthusiasm and excellent teamwork that they needed as a successful team.
