Time to Get Ready: Practice is all it Takes
The 25-year old quarterback of Oakland Raiders, Andrew Walter, was not able to participate in the Raiders’ organized team activities due to a recent knee surgery. Among those not attending the mini-camp include defensive end Derrick Burgess, kicker Sebastian Janikowski, running back LaMont Jordan, punter Shane Lechler, and defensive tackle Warren Sapp. LaMont Jordan was absent due to personal reasons and the other players have missed some or all of the organized team activities, even if they participated in a mandatory mini-camp held in early May. As Coach Lane Kiffin said of an attendance figure of ninety percent, “You always wish they were all here, obviously, but to have as many guys as there are, guys that have been here a lot of times - I'm really pleased with that.”
Though the absence of Andrew Walter to participate in organized team activities is a bad news for him, it was good news for rookie JaMarcus Russell and for veteran Josh McCown. Russell and McCown split time with the first-team offense when the team's three-day mini-camp opened Monday, after participating in a third of the offensive plays previously. Coach Lane Kiffin stated that, “JaMarcus looked really good. Without going back to watch the film, it was JaMarcus' best practice since he's been here. That was glaring to me. I'll see if I still see that once I see the film. He looked real confident.” On the other hand, Josh McCown, who arguably had been the most consistent performer of the three candidates, vying for the starting job after the release of Aaron Brooks. Lane Kiffin said that Josh continues to make great decisions. He even stated that, “He's a very accurate, very great decision-maker, audibles pretty much into the right plays, and has done a great job.” Furthermore, Russell was 265 pounds during the National Football League scouting combine in February, weighed 256 at his personal workout in the month of March and has lost 4 more pounds since the Oakland Raiders selected him with the first pick of the month of April’s draft. That means that the added work also figures to help him keep his weight down.
Lane Kiffin said that at the Raiders’ Alameda facility, the Oakland Raiders players will spend their next week or so with workouts, lifting weights and after that get some extended time away before training camp begins in late July.
