Youth Training Day
300 kids sharpened their skills by learning new techniques as the Oakland Raiders celebrated their 7th Annual Youth Skills Camp, which was presented by California Police, Youth Charities, Red Gourmet Burgers, and The Raider Image.
The Oakland Raiders Youth Skills Camp has been beneficial to everybody who participates in the event. During the event, the Oakland Raiders players assist guest coaches teach the fine points of football. The kids were shown and taught about ways on how to block for the running back carrying the ball, showed by Rookie RB Oren O’Neal. How to properly hold the ball and how to tuck the ball away to avoid fumbling it, was showed by RB Chris Brown. On the other hand, Oakland Raiders’ TE John Madsen showed the kids how the tight end can pass-block and release, becoming another receiving option for the quarterback. LB Kurt Campbell, however, showed the kids the proper footwork when playing linebacker. At lunch, the kids were treated to a tour of the locker area and the weight room. Matthew, a 12-year old from Milpitas, California was happy to see his favorite player, JaMarcus Russell’s locker. The American Football in China Exchange Association attended the Youth Skills Camp. They were selling refreshments to those on the sidelines watching the kids practice. The event was the second year of their partnership with The Oakland Raiders. Danny Chan, Shann Chu, and players from Lowell High School were raising money for a trip to China to be able to get football equipment to high schools in inner China. “Primarily, we want to push the game of football. [We want] to show them how great the game is, that it’s a lot of fun to play,” said Chu. The “Mission to China” takes off in the summer of 2009.
In fact, a 14-year old Gabriel Nava, Jr. of Bakersfield, California returned for his sixth Youth Skills Camp. Raider Legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Willie Brown had a speech yesterday, about doing well in school resonated with Gabriel because he earned his spot at the youth camp. “I got good grades and my parents wanted to reward me,” Gabriel stated. The Youth Skills Camp was enjoyed and was well received by all participating kids. This includes parents, coaches as well as players. California Police Youth Charities has been a sponsor of the event the past two years. Executive Director Chris Eaton was excited by the turnout and looks forward to more events with the Raiders. Eaton even stated that, “This is a perfect fit, getting cops and athletes and kids together to try to make their lives a little bit better.” The CPYC also brings 200 at-risk kids to every home game where they barbeque for them and have Raider Legends speak with the kids. The event was really helpful for everybody and kids were excited for their new found subjects.
Moreover, the Youth Skills Camp also gives inspiration, determination and courage for students. As the Oakland Raiders Youth Skills Camp ended, the kids are much satisfied to learn and apply the new techniques as an aspiring football sports professionals.
