Purpose of Mini Camp

Just before noon this past Sunday, the final horn sounded signaling the conclusion of the Raiders 2008 Rookie Mini-Camp. The three-day, action-packed football camp represents a significant progression toward the start of football season. The camp served many purposes as the coaches and young players hit the field for instruction and drills. For the 40-plus athletes who attended the rookie mini-camp, most know from the outset that making the final 53-player roster is not an easy task. At this stage, any given undrafted rookie free agent is competing against the 2008 draft class, returning players who played in less than four regular season games last season and all the other invitees.

Certainly, to make the final squad, these players will have to shine during their rookie mini-camp and continue to turn heads throughout Organized Team Activities, the mandatory full-team mini-camp, training camp and the pre-season. For many of the rookies who took the field this past weekend, the experience of suiting up for a professional team, let alone the Silver and Black, and receiving tips and instruction from Raiders coaches is partially the realization of a dream in itself. “I can’t even really explain to you the type of energy I get from wearing Silver and Black and being over here at the Raiders facility,” said DE Trevor Scott, a Raiders rookie who was selected in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL Draft. “Walking through these hallways, you see all the pictures of Raiders players and legends. Scott is soaking in his surroundings and is paying close attention to all of the advice coming from his coaches. “I’m learning so much from Coach (Keith) Millard and Coach (Rob) Ryan. They’ve helped me with the little things and have told me to slow down to improve my fundamentals. As much as the three-day rookie mini-camp provides players the opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities, it also presents Raiders coaches the chance to look at a wide group of talent and decide which pieces might fit the team.

Head Coach Lane Kiffin set a familiar standard before the mini-camp, one that finds a foundation in competition above anything else. “I try to prepare our coaches for an open mindset and to take the draft positions off the players. Evaluate these guys. Coach Kiffin and the rest of the Raiders coaching staff learned more about the young players in attendance at the camp. Guys will look different than what you’re used to, than what you thought,” said Coach Kiffin.
The three-day period of positional meetings, individual drills and team drills gave the Raiders coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate more than 40 players to see if they can make a positive impact on the team. On field work for the 2008 Raiders continues with Organized Team Actvities the next few weeks, and a mandatory, full team mini-camp during the first week of June.
