Chargers to host Patriots at Qualcomm Stadium

In a matchup with major playoff implications the New England Patriots travel to San Diego to face the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. The Patriots currently lead the AFC East and are tied with the Denver Broncos for the best overall record in the AFC, with New England currently holding the tie-breaker. The Chargers have rebounded after a rough patch and are in the midst of a three-game winning streak. With an 8-4 record the Chargers are in the thick of the race for a division title and potential home field advantage in the playoffs. A victory over the Patriots would be a significant step for the Chargers in their quest to unseat the Broncos in the AFC West.

Here are three things to watch when the Chargers host the Patriots on Sunday:

A Rough Two-Game Stretch: The Patriots are coming off of a loss in Green Bay this past Sunday in a game many saw as a potential Super Bowl Preview. Although the game only had a five-point margin the Packers led the entire way and if not for struggles in the Red Zone, could have won by double digits. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense were successful versus the Patriots by exploiting the Pats secondary while avoiding Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. A defining aspect of the game was the Packers offensive line giving Aaron Rodgers time to throw. If the Chargers can give Philip Rivers time to throw they should be able to successfully move the football on New England.

Big Game for Antonio Gates? The Patriots have struggled against opposing tight ends this season, especially elite tight ends. According to Football Outsiders the Patriots are 31 in the league versus opposing tight ends, allowing a league high 76.6 yards per game. Last week Green Bay Packers rookie tight end Richard Rodgers was able to get behind safety Patrick Chung for a big 33-yard touchdown reception. In veteran Antonio Gates the Chargers have a potential weapon to exploit the weaker parts of the San Diego defense. Gates has 9 touchdown receptions on the season and is a favorite target of Philip Rivers. Gates got back on track last weekend versus the Baltimore Ravens, catching 7 passes for 83 yards. He has 9 touchdowns on the season and very well could add to that number on Sunday.

Philip Rivers vs. Tom Brady: With his performance over the past several weeks Aaron Rodgers has likely taken over the lead in the NFL MVP race, surpassing both Tom Brady and Philip Rivers, who was the top early season candidate. This weekend's game will be a great opportunity for Rivers to get back into the MVP race if the Chargers can pick up a big win. Rivers has battled injury this season, but got back on track versus Baltimore on Sunday with a 383 yards and three touchdowns. He'll face a fired up Tom Brady who was visibly emotional after losing his big matchup with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Sunday's game is massive for the Patriots who don't want a late season two-game losing streak. Look for Brady and the Patriots offense to be up to the challenge.
