Throughout the 1996 season, Carolina Panthers won their division and made it to the playoffs. It was merely their second year of existence, and the first an NFL expansion team had ever encountered such success. During the previous year, the Panthers won seven games - the most ever by an NFL expansion team.

In 1993, Carolina Panthers founder and owner Jerry Richardson was awarded the first new NFL franchise since 1976, when the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers had joined the football league. Two years later, Carolina and fellow expansion team Jacksonville Jaguars started play. Previous Pittsburgh Steelers coach, Dom Capers, was named the Panthers first coach.

After losing the first five games of the 1995 season, Carolina Panthers won seven of its last 11 games behind wide receivers Mark Carrier and Willie Green. During the season, Carolina Panthers defeated the San Francisco 49ers to be the first expansion team ever to beat a defending league champion. We sell only the best Carolina Panthers Tickets here. You can also view the Carolina Panthers Playing Schedule for all their football games.

In 1996, the Panthers amazed the NFL by winning 12 games and capturing the NFC Western Division title. Carolina Panthers put together the second-best defense in the NFC by featuring three Pro Bowl linebackers: Kevin Greene, Lamar Lathon and Sam Mills. Michael Bates was the league’s best kickoff returner, averaging 30.2 yards per return. Placekicker John Kasay guided the league in scoring, changing on a league-record 37 field goals. Capers was named coach of the year at that time. After getting the division title, Carolina Panthers had beaten the Dallas Cowboys in the football playoffs before losing the NFC Championship Game to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers.

On October 26, 1993, NFL owners unanimously selected Carolina as the 29th NFL franchise and the first expansion team since 1976. Fireworks exploded over uptown Charlotte as jubilant fans gathered to celebrate the news. "This is a dream come true for me and my partners and for the 10 million people in the Carolinas," said Carolina Panthers Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson, who became just the second former player to own an NFL team along with George Halas of the Chicago Bears. The Carolina Panthers quickly became a very formidable and competitive team by electing to go free agent veterans and high draft choices instead of the build slowly route. The Panthers proved their way was successful. Their first ever draft pick was Penn States QB Kerry Collins, who would lead them to the NFC title game in just his second season. The Carolina Panthers made some brilliant moves in the free agent market as well, in just two years, the franchise ascended to the NFL's elite by acquiring 6 free agents who would become valuable starters on their NFC West title team of 1996, including all pro LB'S Sam Mills and sack master Kevin Greene. Their first coach was Dom Capers, a defensive guru who had been the artichet of the Pittsburgh Steelers "blitzburgh" defense and invented the complexed scheme called the "zone blitz', confusing the offense. After their intial success, the team experienced a brief dropout and turnover for the Carolina Panthers. In 2003, under Coach John Fox, another defensive master, the Panthers went 11-5 , defeated the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles, to reach their first Super Bowl where they took on the New England Patriots, losing 32-29 in a classic Super Bowl "great moment in team history". With a berth in the Super Bowl on the line, the Carolina Panthers met the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC title. The Panther defense dimidiated throughout, limiting the Philadelphia Eagles to three pts the entire game to win the National Football Conference title.
