Leggett Passes Away

Sometimes, there are certain things involving the players that can’t be avoided. Being a member of a team is like building a family of sports fanatics. However, like families, the members of the team also have to leave.

The Oakland Raiders are mourning the passing of Earl Leggett, who served two stints as an assistant with the Silver and Black, from 1979-1988 and from 1991-1992. Leggett tutored the defensive line. “He was a trusted, valued contributor to the greatness of the Raiders, having served on two Super Bowl Championship teams. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Bobbie, his children and family.”

Earl Leggett was an assistant on the Raiders’ Super Bowl XV and XVIII winning teams. He played 12 years in the NFL after being a first round pick of the Chicago Bears in 1957 out of LSU. Legget, 6’3”, 264 lbs. Leggett is from Hinds Community College and Louisiana State University. As a professional football player, he played at the defensive tackle and defensive end positions for eleven seasons (1957 to 1960, 1962 to 1968) in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints. He was a member of the 1963 NFL Championship Bears team. Born in Palatka, Florida he later resided in Raymond, Mississippi during his high school years. A star player at Louisiana State University, he was selected by the Bears in the 1st round of the 1957 NFL Draft and appeared in 132 career regular season games. After retiring as a player, Leggett served as a defensive line coach with several NFL teams, including the Oakland Raiders as Los Angeles Raiders where he was on staff when they won Super Bowls XV in 1981 and XVIII in 1984. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

Earl Leggett has been the pride of the Oakland Raiders. He was able to prove his worth as a professional football player and he contributed a lot as a coach of the Oakland Raiders.
