Jacksonville Jaguars
A relatively young team, the Jacksonville Jaguars joined the NFL as expansion teams in 1995. In their inaugural season, the Jaguars broke the record for most wins by an expansion team with a record of 7-9. Their second season, 1996, also proved to be a success as they clinched the 5th seed in the AFC playoffs after beating the Indianapolis Colts. The following season ended strong for the Jaguars as well, with a record of 11-5 and made it to the playoffs again for the second year in a row.
In December 1998, the Jaguars won the AFC Central Division and as a result became the first NFL expansion team to make the playoffs three times in its first four seasons of play. The 2004 season, celebrated as the 10th season of the Jaguars franchise, resulted in a winning record of 9-7 with road victories against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field as well as the Indianapolis Colts at the RCA Dome. The Jaguars finished 2005 with a 12-4 record, which was the second best finish in team history. They qualified for one of the conference's two wild card playoff spots. In 2006, the Jaguars were once again considered play off contenders but injuries continued to plague the team. Reggie Hayward, Greg Jones, Donovin Darius, Byron Leftwich, and Mike Peterson all suffered season-ending injuries and Matt Jones, Marcus Stroud, Paul Spicer, and Fred Taylor also faced injuries during the season. The team started off 2-0, but then lost its next two games. The Jaguars missed the playoffs with an 8-8 record, but there were some positive changes. The Jaguars' second round draft pick, Maurice Jones-Drew, was one of the most surprising rookie sensations and he averaged 5.7 yards a carry, the highest in the league, and tied for 3rd in the NFL with 16 touchdowns.
Because the Jaguars received the first-round pick for the 2007 season, the drafted Reggie Nelson, after passing on Brady Quinn. By picking Nelson they filled a gap created by the departure of free safety Deon Grant. The Jaguars also released longtime strong safety Donovin Darius, who had been suffering injuries. Another change was when the long time back-up quarterback David Garrard became a starter for the team. Garrard led the Jaguars to an 11-5 record and then the playoffs. On January 5, 2008, the Jaguars defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers to win their first playoff game in 8 years. However, the Jaguars fell to the then undefeated New England Patriots.
