Goodbye to Schweigert

On Tuesday, the team of Oakland Raiders released safety Stuart Schweigert, cutting ties with a former starter who lost his job late last season. Stuart Schweigert, who is a third-round pick out of Purdue in 2004, became the starter at free safety midway through his second season in Oakland and started 37 consecutive games. He lost his job to Hiram Eugene when he was forced to miss a game with an injured calf, then played as a backup in the final five games. He struggled at times as a run-stopper and the Raiders team set out to improve their tackling at safety this off-season by signing Gibril Wilson from the New York Giants. Wilson lined up mostly as a strong safety during last week's practice, with former first-round pick Michael Huff shifting to his more natural position of free safety. That left little room for Schweigert.

The Raiders, who began their second week of offseason practices Tuesday, also released linebacker Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, signed as a free agent earlier this offseason. Dallas signed running back Marion Barber and cornerback Terence Newman to long-term extensions. Matt Ryan signed a $72 million, six-year contract with Atlanta, ending concerns that prolonged negotiations could threaten the former Boston College star's chance to become the starting quarterback as a rookie.

To nobody's surprise, NFL owners voted unanimously Tuesday to end their labor agreement with the union in 2011, opting out of a deal that could have gone through 2013. Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, and commissioner Roger Goodell were reasonably optimistic an agreement could be reached before the start of the 2010 free-agent season. The NFL put more teeth in its personal conduct policy when Goodell announced he would fine teams whose players were suspended for disciplinary reasons. New Orleans defensive end Charles Grant has been indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter stemming from a February altercation at a Blakely, Ga., nightclub.

Schweigert was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the 3rd round,67th overall. He was able to put up 52 tackles; 43 solo, 9 assisted and 3 pass deflections In his rookie year. And the following year,Schweigert improved to 87 tackles; 70 solo, 17 assisted, 7 pass deflections and 2 interceptions versus the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs. By 2006, he improved even more by putting up 107 tackles; 86 solo, 21 assisted and 4 pass deflections. By 2007, Schweigert was injured and only recorded 69 tackles; 56 solo, 13 assisted, 4 pass deflections and 2 interceptions.
