The Dolphins are the major league sports franchise in Florida. The Dolphins wears the colors aqua green, coral orange, white, and navy blue.
The Dolphins had its beginnings in 1965, when they joined the American Football League as an expansion team. The name “Dolphins” was chosen through a fan contest. They started to play in 1966, playing their first game against the Oakland Raiders in their original home at the Orange Bowl. As expected from an expansion franchise, the Dolphins struggled in its early years. The Dolphins eventually replaced their head coach, George Wilson. That was when Don Shula’s tenure as the Dolphins head coach started.
Don Shula debuted as the Dolphins head coach in the first season of the NFL-AFL merger. Under his guidance, the Dolphins were able to attend their very first playoffs. The Dolphins bowed out after facing the Oakland Raiders in a 21-14 contest during the divisional playoffs. Much to the delight of fans with Dolphins tickets , the Dolphins finished the season on the second spot of the AFC East, with a record of 10-4. The very next season, the Dolphins continued to achieve success. The Miami team impressed fans with Dolphins tickets by shutting down the Baltimore Colts in a 21-0 contest. The Dolphins advanced to their very first Super Bowl, and faced the Dallas Cowboys, but were thwarted after losing in a 24-3 contest.
The 1972 season of the Dolphins was very impressive. They posted the first perfect season in NFL history, a 14-0 run, on their way to winning the 7th Super Bowl. Avid fans with Dolphins tickets saw the Dolphins dispatch the Pittsburgh Steelers to claim their second conference championship, and then triumphed over the Washington Redskins in a 14-7 contest to claim their first Super Bowl title. The 1973 season was another very successful year for the Dolphins. The Dolphins faced the Oakland Raiders for the conference championship, and much to the delight of fans with Dolphins tickets , dispatched the opposing team in a 27-10 contest. The Dolphins then defended their Super Bowl title against the Minnesota Vikings, whom they defeated in a 24-7 contest to secure a back-to-back NFL championship.
The 1974 season ended for the Dolphins after a hard-fought battle against the Oakland Raiders. The Dolphins advanced to the playoffs and faced the Raiders in a tough 28-26 first round game. The hard-fought defeat marked the end of the Dolphins Super Bowl Dynasty.
Pivotal to the success of the Dolphins during the early 70’s were players like Bob Griese, Paul Warfield, Nick Buouconti, Bill Stanfill, Dick Anderson, and Jake Scott.
The early 80’s saw the spark return to the Dolphins. In 1981, they finished the season with a record of 11-4 before bowing out in the Divisional playoffs against the San Diego Chargers. A strike-shortened season saw the Dolphins claim the Conference title against the Jets, whom they’ve shut down in a 14-0 contest. The Dolphins then faced the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl, but were defeated after a 27-17 contest. The Dolphins again managed to contend for the Super Bowl title in 1984, after dispatching the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 45-28 conference championship game. Under the guidance of first year coach Nick Saban the Miami Dolphins improved drastically in 2005, winning their last six games of the season to finish 9-7 and one game behind the New England Patriots in the AFC East, bringing a lot of optimism and speculation that they can win the division and become a power in the American Football Conference. The acquisition of quarterback Daunte Culpepper should give the Miami Dolphins offense a huge boost and open up more lanes in the run game where second-year man Ronnie Brown is an emerging star, on defense the Miami Dolphins will be very good as usual with veterans LB Zac Thomas and DE Jason Taylor leading a unit that registered 49 sacks and allowed only 85 points in the fourth quarter all year, which is a direct reflection of coach Saban tremendous belief in conditioning and attention to detail.
Offensive tackle Vernon Carey is the most talented player along the o-line as he possesses great strength and size and can dominant all he needs is a bit more experience, since he is only going into his third year, Wade Smith will be the other tackle and is a solid performer that will give his all each snap, free agent pick-up OT L.J. Shelton who played with the Cleveland Browns last season is an intriguing prospect due to the fact he has all-pro ability but needs to work harder and play up to his potential, C/G Seth McKinney could be in the mix somewhere, he is durable and tough and a leader, this unit has a chance to be superb if everyone plays to their abilities. With the one-year suspension of Ricky Williams, the responsibility of running the ball almost solely falls onto to the shoulders of RB Ronnie Brown who struggled early in the year but came on strong late in the season, rushing for 907 yards and catching 32 passes out of the backfield, in 06 Brown could be one of the top runners in the AFC with his straight ahead style and nose for the end zone, FB Fred Beasley was obtained from the San Francisco 49ers via free agency and is one of the top players at his position and should only enhance the running game, Sammy Morris is the second team running back, but many believe rookie RB Gerald Riggs Jr. will grab that spot in the not so far future, Riggs Jr. has a great upside with powerful running style and above average speed that enables him to the second level of defenses, which could make for a deadly and bruising combination with Ronnie Brown, this group of runners will be superb. WR Chris Chambers had a breakout season in '05 with 82 catches, 1118 yards and 11 touchdowns and is rapidly becoming an elite receiver in the NFL, and will team with Marty Booker who is a very good possession receiver and a good blocker on the edges, helping the running backs of the Miami Dolphins break loose for big gains, rookie Derek Hagan out of Arizona State will be the third pass catcher at the beginning of '06 but expect him to perhaps nudge Booker into a reserve role before the season ends.
Randy McMichael is one of the better tight ends in the league with the ability to get into seam and open up the passing lanes for the wide receivers. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper should flourish in Miami and the change of scenery will do him a world of good, Culpepper has everything you would want in a QB, a rocket arm, great speed and power, and is a real competitor, he should return to his all-pro status, Former Detroit Lion Joey Harrington will assume the backup role for the Miami Dolphins and can still has all the tools to be a very good signal caller, the quarterback position is in good hands and will be a strength for the Miami Dolphins. Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor has been a mainstay along the defensive line for a decade and still plays at a high level as he is one of the best edge rushers in the league and very fundamentally sound against the run, DT Keith Traylor is a mammoth run stuffer who engulfs blockers and commands a double-teem block, veteran DE Kevin Carter is still an above average pass rusher that can hold his ground, and DT Vonnie Holiday rounds out this outstanding unit that will be one of the best in the National Football League. The secondary of the Miami Dolphins was overhauled as CB Will Allen was acquired via free agency from the New York Giants and should contribute immediately, young CB Travis Daniels played well in his rookie season as has the size and speed to be a difference maker.
With their first round draft choice the Miami Dolphins chose S Jason Allen from the University of Tennessee, Allen should be terrific as he too has the size/speed combination teams covet, CB Will Poole is yet another speedster in the defensive backfield of the Miami Dolphins and would start for a lot of teams, but here he adds depth to this tremendous unit. MLB Zac Thomas is a multiple all-pro and will be the leader of the line backing group, he along with second year man LB Channing Crowder who had a great rookie campaign will be the nucleus of a group that will harass runners and passers sideline to sideline. The kicking duties of the Miami Dolphins will be handled by PK Olinda Mare and P Donnie Jones, Mare has been a superb kicker for many years. In 2008 the Miami Dolphins will be much improved and should battle the New England Patriots for the AFC East title, look for 9 to 11 wins and a possible playoff berth as the defense becomes one of the NFL's elite.....Great Moment in team history......In 1972 the Miami Dolphins completed the only undefeated season in NFL history by defeating the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII to go 17-0.
