Indianapolis Colts
In recent history the Indianapolis Colts have experienced some great success. The 2005 season proved to be a great season for the Colts as they became the 4 th team in league history to win their first 13 games, but the season ended with an opening playoff game loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. After beating Jacksonville in week 14 they became the fourth team in NFL history to reach a record of 13-0. The team's final record of 14-2 marked the best 16-game season in the team's history. After becoming the first team in NFL history to begin two consecutive seasons by winning nine games, the Colts then lost three of the next four, largely due to the league's worst run defense. However, they still managed to capture their fourth consecutive AFC South title by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals. The Colts finished the season with a 12-4 record which marked their fifth consecutive season with ten victories or more. The Colts went on to defeat the Chicago Bears 29-17 on February 4, 2007 to win Super Bowl XLII. With the Super Bowl win the Colts became the only team so far to win a Super Bowl from the AFC South. Also, ironically, the Colts have made it to the Super Bowl three times, all three in Miami .
Last year the Colts ended the regular season with a record of 13 wins and 3 losses, winning the AFC South title. The 2008 season, the 56th season for the team in the National Football League and 25th in Indianapolis , will find the Colts trying to improve upon that record and avenge their Divisional Round loss to the San Diego Chargers in last years playoffs.
The 2008 season was the Colts' inaugural season playing at the newly-completed Lucas Oil Stadium. It was the first season that the Colts did not win the AFC South title since 2002. After a 3-4 start on the season, the Colts went on a nine-game winning streak and finished the season at 12-4 and earned a wild card berth in the playoffs. They extended their league mark with six consecutive 12+ victory seasons. The club became the first in NFL history to win at least seven consecutive games in five consecutive seasons. Manning won his third NFL MVP award, butIndianapolis fell in the Wild Card Playoffs in overtime at San Diego, 23-17.
Tony Dungy retired on January 12, 2009 and on January 13, Jim Caldwell who had been named his successor previously, was formally announced as the new head coach.
