Kansas City Chiefs History and Info.
The Chiefs is one of the 32 professional American football teams that play in the National Football League. The Kansas City Chiefs are based in Kansas City, Missouri, and is a member of the Western Division of the American Football Conference. Players of the Kansas City Chiefs wear the colors red, gold, and white.
The Kansas City Chiefs can trace its roots back to 1960, when the football franchise was known as the Dallas Texans. The football team was founded by Lamar Hunt, who was also among the founders of the American Football League. The Texans shared the Cotton Bowl with another Dallas-based team, the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans would continue to play in Dallas from 1960-1963, winning an AFL championship in 1962 during their tenure in Dallas. The 1962 AFL championship game against the Houston Oilers is one of the longest American football games, with two overtimes and 77 minutes of play.
The saturation of two teams in Dallas was the reason why Lamar Hunt opted to transfer his football team to another city. Among his choices were Miami, Seattle and New Orleans, but eventually decided on Kansas City after an agreement with Kansas City Mayor H. Roe Bartle. Part of the deal to move the Texans to Kansas was that Kansas City must guarantee that the Texans would be able to ensure 35,000 season ticket sales upon the franchise’s transfer. Mayor Bartle was given 4 months to deliver, and was able to perform the feat, considering the negotiations were done in secret, and he would be selling season tickets for an unidentified team to the residents of Kansas. The Texans then changed their name to the Kansas City Chiefs, in honor of Mayor Bartle, who was given the nickname “The Chief,” when he founded the The Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Fans that had Chiefs tickets started to see them play at the Kansas City Municipal Stadium in 1963.
Kansas City fans supported the new football franchise, which the team paid back by having an excellent decade. They were the premier team in the AFL, with the most play-offs appearance during the decade. Fans with Chiefs tickets were able to watch the team win the AFL championships in 1966 and 1969, and take the Super Bowl Championship in 1969 after dispatching the Minnesota Vikings in a 23-7 contest.
Fans with Chiefs tickets were hosted at the Kansas City Municipal Stadium from 1963 to 1971. The Chiefs would eventually move to the newly opened Arrowhead Stadium in 1972. The Kansas City Chiefs continues to play their home games at the Arrowhead Stadium up to this day.
Arrowhead Stadium is a 79,450-seat stadium that opened on the 12th of August, 1972. It entertains not only fans with Chiefs tickets, but also fans of the Kansas City Wizards, a Major League Soccer representative of the city
For the last four seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs have been trying to return the glory days that they enjoyed during the 60’s. In 2003, the Chiefs posted a 13-3 record, before bowing out during the divisional playoffs against the Indianapolis Colts, who defeated them in a 38-31 contest. In 2004, the Chiefs were not able to reach the NFL playoffs and finished the season with a record of 7-9. The Chiefs jumped back in the next season by ending 2005 with a winning record of 10-6, which was good enough for the 2nd place in the Western Division of the AFC.

The Kansas City Chiefs are currently under the guidance of Head Coach Herman Edwards. Edwards started his tenure as the Chiefs’ head coach on the 10th of September, 2006. He led the chiefs to a 9-7 finish in the 2006 season of the NFL, which was enough to secure them the second spot in the West Division of the American Football Conference. Under Coach Herman Edwards’s guidance, the Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2006 playoffs, but bowed-out after they were thwarted by the Indianapolis Colts in a 23 to 8 Wild Card round.

RB Larry Johnson 2005 would appear to have been an exceptional season for the Kansas City Chiefs as they scored over 400 points, posted a 10-6 record which was good enough for second-place in the loaded AFC West behind the Denver Broncos and discovered the NFL's next great runner in RB Larry Johnson, but for all their success, a playoff berth was just out of reach in the powerful American Football Conference. With the beloved coach Dick Vermeil retiring at the end of last season, the Kansas City Chiefs coaxed former New York Jets coach Herman Edwards to take over the team, which could be an upgrade in some ways, as Edwards is known for being an outstanding game planner and is very organized which the Kansas City Chiefs will have to be to compete in the tough AFC West with the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, and Denver Broncos. Offense wasn’t and hasn’t been the problem for the Kansas City Chiefs in recent times, including last season it was the defense which was hit by injuries in '05 and a lack of team speed is also an issue.
Their are some bright spots as LOLB Derrick Johnson was terrific in his rookie season and CB Patrick Surtain help strengthen the secondary so the stop unit of the Kansas City Chiefs should be even better in '06.On Offense the sensational RB Larry Johnson is the linchpin of a high scoring unit that will continue to give opponents headaches with its multiple sets and versatility. The offensive line of the Kansas City Chiefs is simply awesome with OG Will Shields, OT Willie Roaf, and OG Brain Waters were all selected to the pro bowl last season and are dominant, this unit as a whole has no weaknesses as it can overwhelm you in the run game and keep you away from QB Trent Green. For many years the wide receiver position has been underrated for the Kansas City Chiefs, having no real superstar but the passing numbers for the team have been fantastic because of solid players like Eddie Kennison who had a great '05 campaign with 1,086 receiving yards to go along with eight touchdowns, he will work with young WR Samie Parker who has world class speed and is emerging as a dangerous deep threat, Dante Hall is the third receiver and is capable of breaking off a large chunk of yardage anytime he touches the ball, and as well all know is perhaps the best return man in the game today, at tight end Tony Gonzalez is one of the best to ever play the position and will continue to be a huge part of the passing gamer Larry Johnson was simply unstoppable once he became the feature back, he rumbled for 1,750 yards and 20 TD's and is even more valuable with the status of longtime star RB Priest Holmes uncertain, if Holmes were to come back and be able to play it would make this group the NFL's best, backups Dee Brown and Quentin Griffin are shifty, fast and provide quality depth. At quarterback Trent Green had another superb year passing for 4,014 yards with a passer rating of 90.1, he also has the sixth highest passer rating in NFL history and will be a top 10 passer again in '06, Damon Huard is the second team signal caller now, but could be surpassed by rookie third round pick Brodie Croyle from Alabama, Croyle is an accurate thrower with great poise and awareness, in all the quarterback position is in great shape for the Kansas City Chiefs.
If DT Ryan Sims can finally stay healthy the defensive line could be much improved as he is very difficult to move and has the potential to be one of the best interior defenders in the game, DE Jared Allen is a tough gritty player who will give the team every ounce that he has and is always around the ball, this unit could be above average if all of the components stay injury-free. OLB Kendrell Bell was acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers before the '05 season and is a punishing tackler with good speed and will team with OLB Derrick Johnson and form a dynamic duo that will give opponents nightmares, those two alone make this group outstanding and feared. S Sammy Knight was obtained from the Miami Dolphins and immediately stepped in and played well, he is a sure tackler and a true student of the game, he along with CB Patrick Surtain gives the secondary experience and ability that it has lacked in recent years, veteran S Greg Wesley is another hard hitter that will stick his head in the pile time and again. The kicking duties will be handled by PK Lawrence Tynes and P Dustin Colquitt and should be solid. The outlook for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008 should be favorable with the team winning between 9 and 11 games and the offense lighting up scoreboards and the defense making small steps towards respectability but all these positives do not ensure the Kansas City Chiefs a trip to the postseason as the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos will be among the NFL's elite.......Great moment in team history....The 1970 brethren of the Kansas City Chiefs may have been the best in team history as they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV 23-7.
