Chargers Jets Tickets
The San Diego Chargers continued their impressive form, thrashing the New York Jets 31-0 at Qualcomm Stadium
to run their overall record to 4-1 on the season. San Diego has now won four consecutive games since starting the season with a close loss to the Arizona Cardinals
, and has kept pace with the Denver Broncos at the top of the AFC West.
Where the game was won: The Chargers completely dominated the game in all facets, jumping out to a 21-0 halftime lead and cruising to the shutout victory. Philip Rivers was the story again, further solidifying his MVP candidacy with another outstanding performance. The Chargers quarterback was 20 for 28 passing for 288 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Chargers to a near 2-1 advantage in time of possession. While Rivers was efficiently beating the Jets in the air, breakout running back Branden Oliver was filling in flawlessly for the injured Ryan Mathews on the ground. Oliver gained 114 yards on 19 carries, including an impressive 52 yarder. His performance had led to many comparing him favorably to former Chargers running back Darren Sproles. While the Chargers offense was on fire, so was the defense. San Diego smothered the Jets all day, leading to the eventual benching of starting quarterback Geno Smith for veteran Michael Vick. The former Eagle and Falcon didn't fare any better than Smith, completing just 8 of 19 passes for 47 yards. In all the Jets had just 60 yards passing, one of the poorest passing outputs in recent NFL history. The Chargers, dealing with several injuries on both sides of the ball, outgained the Jets by nearly 300 yards. The Chargers thrashing of the Jets is an indication of how far the Chargers have come. At this point it's clear that San Diego is a legitimate contender not only to win the AFC West, but also to potentially represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.
Up Next for the Chargers: San Diego makes the trip north to Oakland to face the reeling Raiders. After being thrashed by the Miami Dolphins last week in London the Raiders fired Head Coach Dennis Allen, replacing him on an interim basis with former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano. After making several moves in free agency in an effort to contend in the offseason, the Raiders are seemingly going backwards, a move that forced the firing of Allen. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr was injured versus the Dolphins and may be questionable next week versus the Chargers. If Carr can't play the Raiders will either opt for veteran Matt Schaub or third stringer Matt McGloin. Either way, the Chargers will be heavily favored and are a strong bet to move their record to 5-1.
