Chargers Jaguars Tickets
After a sluggish start the San Diego Chargers rounded into form and defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars with a dominating second half. San Diego outscored the Jaguars 16-0 in the second half to turn a 17-14 halftime lead into a 33-14 victory. MVP candidate Philip Rivers was the big factor in the Chargers success again, tossing for 377 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Eddie Royal. The Chargers ran their record to 3-1 and took a half game lead in the division over the Denver Broncos.
Where the game was won: Due to the injuries to Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead the Chargers focused more heavily on the passing game, using high percentage passing to keep the Jaguars defense off balance all game. Both Eddie Royal and Keenan Allen had big games for the Chargers, with Allen catching ten passes for 135 yards. Royal, off to a tremendous start, caught touchdown passes of 47 and 43 yards, joining Allen in the 100 yard receiving club. The Chargers were dealing with massive injuries to several key players on both sides of the football, including using their third center in just four games. Staying true to head coach Mike McCoy's "next man up" philosophy, the Chargers played their typical fundamentally sound football game. Beyond the efficient offense, the defense made the necessary adjustments after halftime to neutralize the Jacksonville offense and quarterback Blake Bortles. The rookie, making his first ever NFL start, had a solid first half, completing 15 of 19 passes for 149 yards. The Chargers kept Bortles in check during the second half, forcing him into two interceptions as they dominated the final 30 minutes. Malcom Floyd kicked off the second half scoring with a 24-yard touchdown reception, while Nick Novak knocked home three field goals.
Up Next for the Chargers: The Chargers play their second consecutive home game this coming Sunday when they welcome in the
New York Jets. The Jets are 1-3 and in the midst of a three game losing streak after falling at home on Sunday to the Detroit Lions. After opening the season with a win versus the Oakland Raiders, the Jets have lost three consecutive games to NFC North opponents, all by a touchdown. The Jets have one of the better defensive fronts in all of the NFL and are adept at stopping the run, but they've struggled on pass defense during the past three games. Offensively the Jets have shown some signs of life, but have largely struggled with second year quarterback Geno Smith at the helm. Like this past week the Chargers will likely need to exploit the Jets through the air, due to their outstanding run defense.
Prediction: Another big early season win for the Chargers who run their record to 4-1. Philip Rivers has another big game and continues to build his MVP candidacy. 27-17 Chargers.
