The Cardinals is a professional American football franchise that plays in the National Football League. The Cardinals are one of the four members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference. The Cardinals are based in Glendale, Arizona, and is the oldest professional American football club that continues to play today. The Arizona Cardinals wears the colors cardinal red, black, and white.

The Arizona Cardinals can trace its roots to as early as 1898, starting as an amateur club based in Chicago, and were known as the Morgan Athletic Club. Its founder, Chris O’Brien, eventually moved his team to Normal Park, then changed the club’s name to the Racine Normals. In 1901, the club would acquire the name Racine Cardinals. The club disbanded in 1906 because it lacked competition, but reformed in 1913. The Cardinals again disbanded in 1918 due to World War I, but resumed operations a year after. In 1920, the Cardinals joined the American Professional Football Association (known today as the NFL), as one of its charter members. In 1925, The Cardinals posted a season record of 11-2-1, and claimed their first NFL title by default. This is due to a controversial ruling by the league officials on a violation of the Pottsville Maroons (now known as the Boston Bulldogs).

Ownership of the franchise changed hands in 1929 after Dr. David Jones bought the team from O’Brien. Dr. Jones eventually sold the team to Charles Bidwill in 1932. Charles Bidwill was not able to see his team win the NFL Championship, as he died in April of 1947, but not before completing the core of his winning team. Charles Bidwill left his team to his wife, Violet.

Much to the delight of fans with Cardinals tickets , the team won the 1947 NFL championship after facing the Philadelphia Eagles in a 28-21 contest. At the core of the victory was the Cardinals’ “Million Dollar Backfield,” comprised of Paul Christman, Charley Trippi, Elmer Angsman, and Pat Harder. The Cardinals ended the season with a record of 9-3. Behind the talent of the team’s talented players, the Cardinals again managed to advance to the 1948 NFL championships, and again faced the Eagles. The two teams faced each other in a heavy snowstorm, and the Eagles rose victorious after a 7-0 game.

The Cardinals eventually moved to St. Louis in 1960, sharing the name “Cardinals” with the MLB’s Cardinals. To distinguish the two teams, sports enthusiasts and broadcasters referred to the teams as “the football Cardinals.” Outstanding players to play for the Cardinals in that decade included athletes such as Larry Wilson, Charley Johnson, Jim Bakken, Sonny Randle, and Jim Hart. Despite the presence of these talented players, lady luck would not smile upon the Cardinals and they never managed to advance to the playoffs during the decade.

The Cardinals would not be able to advance to the playoffs until the 1974 season. Led by Head Coach Don Coryell, they opened the season with a 7-game winning. Fans with Cardinals tickets saw their favorite team win the Eastern Division title of the NFC, but bowed out to the Minnesota Vikings in a 30-14 divisional playoffs game. Again, the Cardinals took the divisional title the following season, but where thwarted by the Los Angeles Rams in a 35-23 divisional playoffs game. The Cardinals ended the season with a record of 11-3. The Cardinals were a very competitive team during these times, and fans and commentators referred to the team as the “Cardiac Cardinals” because of heart-breaking close games that forced them to bow out. At the core of the 70’s Cardinals team were players like Roger Wehrli, Mel Gray, Terry Metcalf, and Jim Otis.

The early 80’s posted some measure of success. The Cardinals posted three consecutive winning seasons from 1981 to 1984. The success they enjoyed can be credited to the effective combination of quarterback Neil Lomax and wide receiver Roy Green.

The Cardinals would eventually move to Arizona in 1988. The move was done because team owner Bill Bidwill was unable to convince the St. Louis officials to build a new stadium. The team was called the Phoenix Cardinals, but changed their name to the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. Fans with Cardinals tickets would not see their favorite team in the playoffs until the 1998 season. The Cardinals dominated the Dallas Cowboys in a 20-7 Wild Card playoffs game. The Cardinals then faced the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional playoffs, but were defeated after a 41-21 contest. The success they enjoyed in 1998 can be credited to quarterback Jake Plummer.

After a 5-11 record in 2005 the Arizona Cardinals have much work to do, and that started in the NFL draft where they plucked several players that have a chance to become stars and continued with the acquisition via free agency of pro bowl running back Edgerrin James who left the Indianapolis Colts to head to the desert. nay experts feel the Arizona Cardinals had the best draft of any team in the league and its easy too see why as they grabbed USC quarterback Matt Leinart with the 10th pick which is a steal, look for Leinart to be an all-pro type within the next three to four years, the draft also produced mammoth Deuce Lutui who was a college teammate of Matt Leinart and should be an immediate starter and also will some day be in the Pro Bowl.

The other notables are DT Gabe Watson of Michigan who is extremely agile for a man that weighs 330 lbs. and six-foot eight tight end Leonard Pope of Georgia who will be weapon in the red zone for years to come, this season the Cardinals must get better on defense in order to compete in NFC West and have the talent to do so as their younger defenders are maturing quickly if that happens they could make some noise in '06, because the offense will be a high scoring with QB Kurt Warner, James, and a terrific group of receivers. Offensive Line play for the Arizona Cardinals must improve and has the potential to do just that as OT Leonard Davis leads the way, he is powerful and strong in the run game and is almost impossible to get around when protecting the passer, the aforementioned Lutui will be devastating in the running game as well and will be an above average OG the moment he steps foot on the field with the potential for greatness, the rest of the O-line is solid but has to get better in order for the Cardinals to manhandle opponents. Wide receiver is the strongest, deepest, and most talented position on the team led by pro bowler Larry Fitzgerald who was simply superb in '05, catching 103 passes for 1,409 yards and 10 touchdowns, he teams with Anquan Boldin and Bryant Johnson to form a trio that is the NFL's best, this group of wide outs is a secondary nightmare possessing size, speed, and tremendous route running. The running back position was a concern before the signing of Edgerrin James who is the complete package as he is a back that can run with power and speed in addition to being one of the best receivers out of the backfield, James is one of the top five running backs in all of football and will be a great weapon, backing him up will be second-year man J.J. Arrington who has great speed and could start for some teams around the league, he provides depth along with Marcel Shipp who was once a starter for the Arizona Cardinals.

With Kurt Warner and Josh McCown, quarterback was considered a team strength, with the addition of Matt Leinart it becomes even stronger as of the three is capable of leading the team and keeping the offense in high gear, as Warner is a two-time NFL MVP and McCown played well when Warner went down with injuries last season, and as for Leinart the former Heisman trophy winner has it all smarts, poise, accuracy, and the experience of running a pro-style offense. In pro bowl place-kicker Neil Rackers the Arizona Cardinals have the best in the business, its almost a sure three points when the Arizona Cardinals get past midfield. Darnell Dockett will anchor the defensive line from his under tackle spot, and could become a dominant force, along DE Chike Okeafor who came over from the San Francisco 49ers last season and instantly provided a pass rushing element the team had been lacking, nose tackle Ross Kolodziej is workmanlike and will never be a all pro but is tough and hard-nosed. Linebacker is a spot where great talent and potential lies as OLB Karlos Dansby has speed to cover a lot of ground and will one day be a bon a fide star, and with inside linebacker James Darling who has a nonstop motor this unit could be very good, especially if young OLB Darryl Blackstock lives up to his enormous potential. Second-year CB Antrel Rolle will be the leader of the secondary as his great nose for the ball is a great asset, he should be outstanding in '06, hard-hitting strong safety Adrian Wilson is great against the run and punishes receivers as does CB David Macklin who is a little small but does all the things you need to win. With all the new additions the Arizona Cardinals should be much improved as the offense will continue to score points in bunches and the defense will improve if front seven stays healthy, so look for the Arizona Cardinals to be much better but not yet a playoff team for coach Dennis Green but a second place finish in the NFC West is not out of the question......Great moment in team history, In 1998 the Arizona Cardinals ended a 15-year drought by making the postseason although they were one of the youngest teams' in the league and posted the franchises first playoff victory since 1947, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 20-7 at Texas Stadium behind QB Jake Plummer.
