The Tampa Bay Buccaneers is one of the great teams of the National Football League. Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a member of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, often referred to as the Bucs, is based in Tampa, Florida, and homed in Raymond James Stadium.

The team of Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the National Football League in 1976. By means of a “name the team” contest, the team name, Buccaneers, was derived from the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, which is an annual event in Tampa. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers expansion franchise was at first awarded to Ted McCloskey, but due to financial problems, the franchise was handed to Hugh Culverhouse.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers was originally a member of the AFC West. By 1977, the team moved to NFC Central, switching places with Seahawks. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers struggled during their first three seasons in the National Football League. But as early as 1979, the team of Tampa Bay Buccaneers was able to finish a record of ten wins and six losses. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who was in first place in the NFC Central division by that time, defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by 24-17. But unfortunately, the team of Buccaneers lost to the L.A. Rams during the Conference Championship by 9-0. By 1981, the team of Tampa Bay Buccaneers once again got the first spot in the National Football Conference Central Division with a record of 9-7. By 1994, the Buccaneers chose QB Trent Dilfer as their first round draft pick. In 1997, the Buccaneers won the Wild Card Playoffs against the Detroit Lions with 20-10.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 1999 season was also productive, with the team obtaining first position in the NFC Central. The Buccaneers won the Divisional Playoffs against the Redskins with 14-13. The 2002 season, however, was considered as the best season for the team of Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers reached the Super Bowl and even achieved the Super Bowl title for the first time in franchise history. The team proved that they are a strong team in spite of hardships during the first few seasons in NFL. With a record of 12-4, the team defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Playoff by 31-6. As the Buccaneers reached the Conference Championship, the team faced the Philadelphia Eagles with 27-10. The Super Bowl XXXVII was played on the 26th of January, year 2003, at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California; with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers facing the Oakland Raiders. The Super Bowl XXXVII was also known as the Gruden Bowl due to Jon Gruden, who was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1998 to 2001 and became the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach in 2002. Jon Gruden led the Buccaneers to improve their games since 1998. The skills of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was further enhanced in 1999 and they also acquired quarterback Rich Gannon. During the Super Bowl XXXVII, Jon Gruden knew the Raiders offense so well. On the other hand, the Buccaneers’ defense had its back against the wall early as Brad Johnson threw an interception on the Buccaneers first possession. However, the defense rose to the occasional and held the number 1 offense in the NFL to a FG. The Buccaneers would quickly tie the game on their next possession. Knowing the Raiders offense would begin to pay off as 2 Dexter Jackson interceptions to give the Buccaneers a 6-3 lead. While the Buccaneers defense was shutting down the Raiders offense, the Buccaneers offense was starting to break down the Raiders defense as a long drive led to a Mike Alstott TD. The Buccaneers would pad their lead to 20-3 as Keenan McCardell caught a TD pass in the final minute of the first half. The Buccaneers defense had completely taken the Raiders out of the game by allowing just 3 first downs 62 yards total offense. The Buccaneers would get off to a strong start in the second half as they expended their lead to 27-3 on a 14-play 89-yard time consuming Touchdown drive. Dwight Smith picked off Rich Gannon for a 44-yard interception return to give the Buccaneers a 34-3 lead. However, the Raiders would not give up as they scored 3 touchdowns to take get back with in 2 touchdowns at 34-21. With time winding down, the Buccaneers defense would again rise to the occasion as Derrick Brooks return an interception 44 yards for a TD to give the Buccaneers a 41-21 lead with 1:18 left. The return by Brooks sent the Buccaneers into celebration as Dexter Jackson was voted MVP for his 2 early interceptions that set the trend for the game. Their defense was not done scoring as Dwight Smith returned his 2nd interception 50 yards for a TD that put an exclamation point on the Buccaneers 48-21 Super Bowl Victory.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the NFL in 1976 as a growth team. Former University of Southern California (USC) head coach John McKay was employed to pilot the club, but Tampa Bay’s first season was a dismal one. The club become the first Tampa Bay Buccaneers team in NFL history to lose 14 out of 14 regular-season games, anguish five shutouts and fielding the conference’s worst offense and defense. The Buccaneers losing line grew to a league-record 26 successful games as the club lost the first 12 games of its next season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers improved their game in 1978, winning five games behind running backs Ricky Bell and Anthony Davis, rookie quarterback Doug Williams, and brothers Lee Roy and Dewey Selmon, who play defensive end and linebacker, respectively. A year later, in 1979, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stunned the league, delightfully winning their first five games en route to a first-place tie with the Chicago Bears in the Central Division. Williams had an outstanding season and Bell ran for an additional 1,250 yards. The Selmon brothers led a top-rated protection defense and McKay was named coach of the year. In the playoffs Tampa Bay upset the Philadelphia Eagles previous to falling to the Los Angeles Rams (now St. Louis Rams) in the NFC Championship Game.
