  • Cleveland Browns

Founded in 1946 by businessman Arthur B. "Mickey" McBride, the Cleveland Browns became a charter member of the All-America. The Browns dominated the AAFC by winning all four of its championships including the 1948 season in which they became the first unbeaten and untied team in professional football history. Twenty four years later the 1972 Miami Dolphins did it again. Cleveland 's undefeated streak, including 2 ties, climbed to 29 games, and included 18 straight wins and the 1947 and 1948 AAFC championship games. During the AAFC's four-year run, they lost only four games. The NFL agreed to take in three of the AAFC's teams for the 1950 season and it was obvious that their first choice would be the Cleveland Browns. In 10 years of existence, the Browns reached the title game every year, with four in the AAFC and six in the NFL, and won seven of them. After several losing season following their winning streak, mainly due to several players' retirements and trades, Art Modell purchased the team from David Jones, who had previously bought the team from McBride in 1953, in 1961. The Browns would then go to three more NFL title games in Collier's eight-year tenure, including 1968 and 1969. The Browns won a division title in 1971 and a wild-card berth in 1972 and they just barely missed the playoffs in 1973.

After several disappointing seasons, 1980 showed marked improvement. They went on to win the division and reached their first playoff game in eight years. After 1984, which was a rebuilding year, the Browns would then reach the playoffs in the next five seasons, advancing to the AFC Championship game in three of those years. In 1990, however, things began to unravel as the team finished last in the league in rushing offense, and almost at the bottom in rushing defense. After that season Bill Belichick was named head coach. Under new coach Butch Davis, the Browns became more competitive, and finished 7-9 in 2001. In 2002, the Browns made the playoffs for the first time since 1994. The Browns finished with double-digit losing records in 2003 and 2004. In 2005 Romeo Crennel, was named the Browns head coach. Despite the change, the 2005 and 2006 seasons saw the Browns losing trend continue.

In the 2007, however, the team saw a remarkable turnaround on the field. In his first start, quarterback Derek Anderson led the Browns to a 51-45 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing five touchdown passes, which tied the franchise record. The Browns finished the 2007 season 10-6, and just barely missed the playoffs due to tie-breaker rules. Nevertheless, the 10-6 record was the team's best record in over 13 years and six players earned Pro Bowl recognition. Coach Crennel has now agreed to a two-year contract extension.

What will the 2008 season hold? The Browns came close to the playoffs last season and they now believe that they can make it. After an incredible mid-season turnaround last year, Anderson found his groove with Jamal Lewis, Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow and their offensive line was rebuilt. They used the off-season to work on their defensive line with newly acquired Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. If the defense can improve as much as the offense did last season, the Browns could become playoff contenders. Cleveland has been waiting many years for a team like this - strong players, a coach that has been signed to a contract extension, and a strong front office. In 2008, the Browns could be the team to bet in the AFC North.
