2008 Aztec Run with the Raiders

This past Sunday, the Oakland Raiders were proud sponsors of the 2008 Aztec Run for Education in Oakland. The family-oriented event featured a mariachi band at the start/finish line and a variety of unique team categories for families, corporate groups, non-profit organizations and other groups. It began in 1983, the Aztec Run for Education and ran successfully for 10 years before going into hibernation for several years. Under the leadership of the Spanish Speaking Citizens Foundation, the Aztec Run resurfaced in 2006. By 2007, the race date was moved to coincide with the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration in Oakland’s Fruitvale District. Jarrod Cooper and Raiderettes Kathleen and Cole were on hand to greet the arriving runners. For them to have a run like this is great,” said Cooper. The race started a little after 8:00 a.m. As the runners prepared, Cooper served as the honorary starter and the runners were off. The Raiderettes stood on either side of the finish line awaiting runners as they completed the race. Crossing the Finish Line 17 minutes after the race began – he was the first runner to complete the race. “It was a great run. I had a great time running here in the Bay Area. It’s the first time I ran Oakland. Emily Enstice of San Francisco was awarded Top Female, completing the race in 22:19. “Today we had our 2008 Aztec Run for Education which is actually a fundraising run for the Spanish speaking citizen’s foundation which is a local non-profit down in the Fruitvale District that brings education programs to the Latino community. Participants ages varied from five to 70 years old. One of the members ran along with her five-year-old. The last runner to cross the finish line was 13-year-old Dominique who sprained his ankle approximately two miles into the race. Runners were divided into categories based on age. Alex races weekly with his parents but said this was the first year he participated in the Aztec Run and looks forward to running it again next year. The Top Family Team was the Briones family. “We ran as a family group. Since we all finish the [race] at different times, the way they record time is by noting the time of the first three members of our group to complete the race. We run in honor of our father – Bernardino Briones, who unfortunately passed away the year we first ran it and now we continue to run it every year in his honor,” Miguel Briones said.

The Oakland Raiders team of Jarrod Dillon, Robert Kinnard, Patty Herrera and Matt Fahr took first place in the Corporate category. All proceeds from the Aztec Run go to support the educational programs of the Spanish Speaking Citizens Foundation, an Oakland-based non-profit organization. The Raiders have been a big part of our event,” said Rodriguez. The Oakland Raiders promotes the values and importance of education especially with youth nowadays.
