December 1st versus Rams
The Rams made major strides last season under Jeff Fisher, including playing the 49ers extremely tough in two games. The Rams and Niners played to a tie in San Francisco and the Rams won the return matchup in St. Louis. The fact the Rams played the 49ers for 135 minutes of football and outscored them is a testament to the toughness that Jeff Fisher immediately brought to the team. One of the elite NFL coaches, Fisher has proven time and time again that he can get maximum effort out of the teams he coaches. The Rams took Tavon Austin with the 8th pick in the draft and the game breaker from West Virginia gives them a new element on offense. The Rams had Austin to a solid, but young, receiving corps of Chris Givens and Austin Pettis. The presence of Austin and the expected improvement of the other young receivers will give Sam Bradford some talented receivers to throw to. With Stephen Jackson signing with the Atlanta Falcons running back is suddenly a question mark for the Rams. Jackson has been a mainstay for the past decade and the rest of the division will be happy he's now playing for the Falcons.

The Rams are close to becoming an elite NFL defense. Chris Long and James Laurinitis are two of the best players in football at their positions, and Janoris Jenkins is a young potential shut-down cornerback. The 2011 first round pick Robert Quinn and the 2012 first round pick, Michael Brockers, have teamed with Long to become one of the most talented young defensive lines in the league. Controversy aside, Cortland Finnegan is an excellent corner opposite Jenkins. The Rams selected Alec Ogletree in the late first round. Ogletree is a talented inside linebacker who should be another nice addition to the offense.

The Rams are clearly on the upswing and are legitimate playoff contenders. They may not challenge for the division title, due to the presence of San Francisco and Seattle, but they can definitely make the race interesting. By: Chris Michaels
