49ers Vs Cardinals: About the Cadinals
After a strong start 4-0 start to the season last year the wheels fell off the Cardinals team and they ended up a mediocre 5-11. The Cardinals collapse cost Coach Ken Whisenhunt his job and has led to yet another quarterback change in Phoenix. The new Cardinals quarterback, Carson Palmer, is very familiar with Oakland Raiders and USC Trojans fans. After spending a year shuffling between Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley the Cardinals decided to go out and take a chance on a veteran quarterback. Palmer still shows elite flashes, but is extremely turnover prone and very much on the downside of his career. Palmer should develop a quick bond with superstar wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. After spending a season during his prime with Kolb and Lindley throwing him the football, Fitzgerald should be motivated more than ever to have a huge season. In addition to Fitzgerald the Cardinals also boast their top pick from last year, former Notre Dame star Michael Floyd.
The Cardinals hired Bruce Arians way from the Colts. The former Colts offensive coordinator ended up taking over head coaching duties for much of the second half of last season due to Chuck Pagano's battle with Leukemia. Arians did such a tremendous job that he received attention as a potential coach of the year candidate. Arians did wonders in turning around the Colts offense and early indication from Arizona is that the Cardinals excited about their offensive football team in Arizona again. If Arians can turn the Cardinals into a respectable offense their strong defense could once again make them legitimate contenders. If Ryan Williams can ever stay healthy at running back the Cardinals could have a potential game breaker in the former Virginia Tech star. Due to injury Williams has barely played in his first two season for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals added Jonathon Cooper, an offensive lineman from North Arizona, in the seventh round. Cooper should help shore up what was perhaps the worst offensive line in football last season.
