The 49ers look to next season
Following a hard fought Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens the San Francisco 49ers will head into the 2013 NFL season as the co-favorites, along with their division rival Seattle Seahawks, to represent the NFC in the 2014 Super Bowl. With elite head coaching, a star young quarterback, a host of weapons on offense and perhaps the league's elite defense the 49ers are perhaps the league's most talented team. Not long ago the NFC West was the laughingstock division of the NFL. With the Niners, Seahawks and improving Rams the division may soon be the league's elite.
The evolution of Colin Kaeparnick added the extra dimension to the Niners offense that took them from average offense to a potentially elite NFL offense. The third year quarterback will have another full offseason under the tutelage of Coach Jim Harbaugh , a frightening thought for many NFL defensive coordinators. Kaepernick represents the new breed of NFL quarterbacks, a big and extremely fast runner who's also extremely accurate as a passer. The Niners offense was extremely multi-dimensional in the late year run and into the playoffs with the presence of Kaepernick opening up the run game for Frank Gore and his passing turning Michael Crabtree into an elite NFL wide receiver. It will be interesting to see how NFL defensive coordinators adapt to the Niners read-option scheme. There is a perception among many NFL insiders that it's just a matter of time before NFL defensive schemes adapt to defending the read-option. If that's the case and teams can effectively contain Kaepernick as a runner he'll have to beat teams with his arm.
It's impossible for elite NFL teams with talented rosters to keep all of their players and the Niners were no exception. GM Jed York did a solid job keeping the core part of the roster intact, but did lose key players Dashon Goldson, Isaac Sopoaga, and Delanie Walker. Goldson was a pro bowl safety and will be missed as will the Sopoaga, a key cog in the Niners run defense. Walker, an underrated tight end, helped form one of the league's elite tight end combinations along with Vernon Davis. Part of staying on top in the NFL is replenishing roster spots when you lose key players. The Niners did go out and sign former Raider Nnamdi Asomugha. The former pro bowl cornerback had a difficult couple of years in Philadelphia but may be going to the right team to help him regain his form. Many pundits argued that the Eagles didn't utilize Asomugha in an ideal way and his performance suffered as a result. With such a strong core of players around him the Niners should be able to leverage Asomugha's lock down coverage skills. Even if Asomugha doesn't regain the form he had in Oakland the 49ers will still be extremely stout on defense. Due to years of solid drafting they have the depth to overcome the loss of Sopoaga and Goldson. With the best linebacker group in football in Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman and the strong defensive end/line play of Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks and Justin Smith they'll continue to give opposing offenses fits.
The "window of opportunity" concept in the NFL is often overplayed but it does ring true for the Niners. With additional young talent maturing and the need to re-sign a roster full of stars each offseason NFL teams often hit a window of opportunity. The 49ers window is open wide right now and anything less than a Super Bowl Championship next season may be a disappointment for 49er fans.
