49ers fall to the Panthers
Facing an elite NFC defense with two weeks rest coming off of a bye the San Francisco 49ers suffered a disappointing loss at home to the red hot Carolina Panthers. The Panthers won their fifth straight behind their stellar defense, holding 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to just 91 yards passing. The loss dropped the 49ers further behind the division leading Seattle Seahawks and sets up a must win game next week versus the NFC South leading New Orleans Saints.

Where the game was won: The 49ers lack of ability to put the ball in the end zone on three first half drives kept the Panthers in the game and allowed them to eventually pull ahead and keep the 49ers off the scoreboard in the second half. 49ers kicker Phil Dawson kicked three first half field goals to put the 49ers up 9-0 in a game they seemingly controlled. The San Francisco defense was in complete control in the first quarter, giving up -12 yards total offense to Cam Newton and the Panthers. The Panthers eventually got their offense moving and were able to punch the ball into the end zone on DeAngelo Williams' 27-yard touchdown run just after the two-minute warning of the first half. The game would remain 9-7 until Panthers kicker Graham Gano kicked a 53-yard field goal to put the Panthers up for good in the fourth quarter. The story of the game was the dominant performance of the Panthers defense. Carolina allowed just ten first downs and limited the 49ers to just 2 for 13 on third downs. San Francisco averaged just 2.9 yards per play as the Panthers dominant front seven controlled the game. The Panthers harassed Kaepernick all night, sacking the 49ers quarterback six times. When tight end Vernon Davis left the game in the first half with a concussion the 49ers offense was all too one-sided.

Next up for the 49ers: San Francisco returns to the site of their Super Bowl loss as they travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints. With Head Coach Sean Payton back from a year-long suspension the Saints are again one of the NFC's elite teams. With a loss to the Panthers a victory over the Saints is vital. The Seahawks currently have a two-game advantage over the 49ers with a victory in hand. With Seattle hosting the hapless Vikings next week a loss to the Saints could effectively end the 49ers run for the division title and put them in a wildcard battle. The Saints are as dominant as ever offensively under the leadership of Payton and the quarterback play of Drew Brees. After struggling to stop teams the past couple of season's the Saints have revamped their defense and are stopping teams at a respectable level. New Orleans will put points on the board, the big question is whether or not San Francisco can muster enough offense to win a potential shootout at the Superdome.

Prediction: The 49ers are too good to lose consecutive games. They come back in a big way and defeat the Saints. 34-24 49ers. By: Chris M
