The 49ers are a professional American football franchise that participates in the National Football League. The 49ers are one of the four members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference. The 49ers are based in San Francisco, California, and wear the colors cardinal red, metallic gold, and black. The 49ers got their name from the 1849 California Gold Rush.

The 49ers can trace their beginnings in 1946, when they joined as a charter member of the All-American Football Conference. The 49ers were the first major league sports franchise based in San Francisco. Although they enjoyed considerable success in the AAFC, the 49ers was never successful on taking the top spot from the Cleveland Browns during the league’s existence. The 49ers would eventually be admitted to the NFL in 1950.

The 49ers struggled for much of their first seasons in the NFL. The 49ers enjoyed their most successful season for the decade in 1957. One of the most memorable games in that season was their game against the Chicago Bears. Owner Tony Morabito suffered a fatal heart attack during the middle of the game. After Coach Frankie Albert learned of the tragic event, the 49ers rallied to surpass a 17-7 score in halftime, to win the game in a 21-17 come-from-behind win. The 49ers ended their season with a record of 8-4, finishing on the second spot of the western division of the NFL.

The 49ers hired Dick Nolan as head coach in 1968. Dick Nolan would eventually turn the fortunes of the 49ers, but suffered two mediocre seasons prior to the 1970 season.

The 49ers enjoyed a very successful early 70’s. In the 1970 season, fans with 49ers tickets saw their favorite team win their first divisional championship against the Minnesota Vikings, whom they defeated in 17-14 contest. The 49ers had a shot for the conference title, but lost to the Dallas Cowboys in a 17-10 contest. The 49ers ended the season with a record of 10-3-1. The following season, the 49ers won their second division title, this time against the Washington Redskins, whom they faced in a 24-20 contest. The 49ers bowed out after losing to the Cowboys in the conference championship. Again, they took the 1st spot of the west NFC in 1972, but were again thwarted from advancing by the Dallas Cowboys in a 30-28 divisional playoffs game. The 1972 season would be the last successful season for the 49ers.

The 80’s spelled a successful decade for the 49ers. Bill Walsh was appointed as the 49ers head coach in 1979. Under his guidance, the 49ers won their first Super Bowl title, after defeating the Chicago Bears for the conference title, and then dispatched Cincinnati Bengals in front of 81,270 fans with 49ers tickets in a 26-21 contest. The 49ers ended the season with a record of 13-3. In 1983, the 49ers again took the NFC west title, but lost to the Washington Redskins in the conference championships. The next season, the 49ers had a monstrous season, steam rolling the Chicago Bears in a 23-0 contest to take the conference championship, on their way to facing the Miami Dolphins in the 19th Super Bowl. The 49ers also took the divisional titles of 1996 and 1987, against the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, respectively. Fans with 49ers tickets saw their favorite team take the conference title in 1988 against the Chicago Bears, whom they defeated in a 28-3 game, on their way to winning the 23rd Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals, whom they defeated in a 20-16 game. The following year, the 49ers were again a very dominant team. They faced the Los Angeles Rams for the conference championships, and handily defeated them in a 30-3 contest. They faced the Denver Broncos in the 24th Super Bowl, and defeated them in the most lop-sided game to grab the Super Bowl title, ending the game with a score of 55-10.

The 90’s was another successful decade for the 49ers. Fans with 49ers tickets saw their favorite team take the top spot of the NFC west in 1990, 1992, and 1993. In 1994, the 49ers defeated the Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC championship. The 49ers then battled the San Diego Chargers in front of 74,107 fans with 49ers tickets , defeating them after a 49-26 contest.

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history boasting five Super Bowl titles on their resume, but of late, wins have been difficult to come by with last season's 4-12 record. Head coach Mike Nolan must revamp his defense and make it formidable opponent especially with the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, and defending NFC champion the Seattle Seahawks all being division rivals and possessing high-powered offenses. The keys to the offense were handed to young Alex Smith late in the year and while he struggled as expected, the experience will be invaluable. The San Francisco 49ers must surround Smith with some weapons and a sturdy offensive line if he is to reach his vast potential.

The loss of perennial all-pro OLB Julian Peterson who was signed away by the Seattle Seahawks was an enormous hit to take for an already below average defense. His replacement must be found quickly, but whoever takes his place in the lineup will certainly not be as productive.

At running back, the San Francisco 49ers appear to be in decent shape as young Frank Gore, who is a breakaway threat and a tough inside runner, gets the starting position since, RB Kevan Barlow, who is a hammer with good straight-line speed, was traded to the New York Jets. The loss of Fred Beasley at the fullback position was huge because he was an excellent blocker and could catch the ball out of the backfield, but both Terry Jackson and bullish Chris Hetherington hope to fill the void. Both are decent blockers with Jackson being the better runner and receiver.

Wide receiver is another position of concern as there are no real game changers or big play types among the group. WR Antonio Bryant was acquired from the Cleveland Browns and could be on the verge of becoming a top tier pass catcher as he caught 69 passes for 1,009 yards last season while with the Cleveland Browns. The other starting spot is up for grabs with Arnaz Battle, Rasheed Marshall, and Derrick Hamilton having a legitimate shot. Battle was impressive late in the year as a receiver so he may have a leg up on the position. At the tight end position, the San Francisco 49ers used their first round selection in this year's past draft on Vernon Davis out of the University of Maryland who should become the go-to guy in the passing game. Davis has outstanding speed and size and can beat not only linebackers but defensive backs as well. He is a mismatch for many defenders and looks to be QB Smith’s main target.

New arrival, OG Larry Allen, was signed away from the Dallas Cowboys and will anchor the inexperienced offensive line. Allen is considered the strongest man to ever play pro football with a bench press of 700 pounds and has been selected to the pro bowl the last 10 years. Simply put OG Larry Allen is the best offensive guard to ever put on pads. Joining him on the line will be young OG David Baas, another earthmover who will continue to improve and is a sledgehammer in the run game, and at center, Jeremy Newberry is an excellent pass blocker and can generate a nice push in the run game. Overall, this unit could be well above average and has a chance to be overwhelming in the run game.

QB Alex Smith has all the tools to be a top flight passer in the NFL, all he needs is more game experience under his belt as he possesses a strong arm and elusive feet. His backup is Trent Dilfer who has won a Super Bowl and is very capable of leading the team should anything happen to Smith, which makes the position above average.

Veteran DE Bryant Young has played 13 seasons and is still one of the best edge defenders in the game with his great hands and strength. He will team with DT Anthony Adams and form a tough front wall that should be better against the run this season. Linebacker is a position that is in good shape despite the loss of OLB Julian Peterson, as the San Francisco 49ers used their second first round pick on DE/OLB Manny Lawson of N.C. State, who is a terror rushing the passer but also has the great speed needed to excel in pass defense. Joining him will be rugged MLB Derek Smith, also good against the run. Workmanlike LB Jeff Ulbrich, a hard-nosed defender, and OLB Saleem Rasheed should also help the linebacker corps mix things up on defense.

S Tony Parrish is an excellent all around defensive back and a punishing hitter that strikes fear into hearts of receivers and runners and should be in the pro bowl once again. CB Sammy Davis was obtained form the San Diego Chargers and should be a high level player due to his great speed and coordination, all he needs is to get his confidence going in the right direction. Five-year veteran CB Kris Richard was picked up from the Miami Dolphins and will help as well. As a whole, this unit has a chance to be good especially if the d-line can put any type of pressure on the passer.

The kicking duties will be handled by PK Joe Nedney and rookie P Tom Malone who was an all-American at USC.

It will be difficult for the San Francisco 49ers to make the playoffs in '06 but should show improvement as Smith will continue to make strides in his first full season as a starter and TE Vernon Davis will immediately be one of the top players at his position. On defense, they should play better due to the players getting more comfortable with defensive mastermind Nolan's schemes. Seven to eight wins is not out of the question and sounds realistic.
