2008 Raiders Golf Classic

The world of Oakland Raiders is not just limited to football alone. In fact, the Oakland Raiders Golf Classic benefiting Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) took place this past Thursday at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, Calif. Registration opened at 9:00 a.m. and from then until tee time tournament participants could practice their swing or delve into a light breakfast and socialize with all the Raiders, whether coaches, players or Legends in attendance. The money raised at the Golf Classic underwrites the SONC Summer Games which will be taking place from June 6-8 at the University of California at Berkeley. Over 1,000 athletes from all over Northern California will participate in the summer games that showcase aquatics, bocce, tennis, track and field, volleyball and more.

Jill Osur, who serves as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development for SONC knows how vital the success of the Raiders Golf Classic plays in putting on a successful summer games. This event plays a critical role in helping support those athletes and allowing them to achieve dreams of Olympic proportion,” said Osur.

Osur believes, “A lot of people don’t know how community minded the Raiders are.
Furthermore, it was easy to find evidence of the Raider Legends enjoying their time together. Tom Flores, who played quarterback for the Raiders in the 1960s and coached the team to two Super Bowl championships, was thrilled to be at the Raiders Golf Classic. “It’s nice to see former players. “I came out to play in the tournament for the Raiders and the Special Olympics.” According to Flores, events like this send the message that professional sports teams are concerned and involved with organizations that need assistance. “It shows there is more to an organization than just a Sunday afternoon,” noted Flores. “The players and the organizations do care for the community and it’s important to give back.” The appeal of participating in such a great tournament stretched past the borders of the United States, as one participant drove down all the way from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to participate. Rick Brar, who has attended Raiders games for 12 years and has been a season ticket holder for two, was happy he made the trek from his native land. “It was a Raider road trip,” Brar happily boasted. “We drove from Vancouver to participate in this tournament for the Special Olympics.” Raider Legend Ben Davidson, who played defensive end for the Silver and Black from 1964-1971, was proud to participate in the event and seemed to understand what the golf tournament was really about. “Having been a professional athlete playing the game for money you realize how important it is to support the Special Olympics. It’s kids just playing sports for pure fun and personal accomplishment and it’s really great to see,” said Davidson.
In addition to this, the golf tournament accentuates the spirit of sport while helping athletes in need. “The fun of playing sports is hanging around with the teammates and the camaraderie, so it’s great fun to come back and see teammates and former Raider players,” Davidson added.
It was fun and a memorable time for the participants of the event.
