Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers enter the 2008 NBA Playoffs as the best in the West. For the first time since 2004, the Lakers have finished the regular season with the number one seed in the Western Conference. The Lakers 57-25 record comes as a pleasant surprise considering they began the season winning only nine of their first seventeen games. The emergence of Andrew Bynum early in the season helped bolster the Lakers run to the top of the West by providing the team with a much needed inside presence. After Bynum went down with a dislocated knee in early January, the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol, who helped fill the void left by the injured young center. Gasol’s soft touch and pin point passing blended seamlessly with the Lakers, leading them to seventeen victories in their next twenty games. The addition of Gasol also seemed to bring out the best in Lakers forward Lamar Odom, who has been more focused and productive in the last 6 months than his entire stint with the Lakers. In the ’07 – ’08 season Odom has averaged over fourteen points, ten rebounds and three assists per game, and he has recorded forty four double doubles this season alone.
The Los Angeles Lakers tumultuous off season was filled with tension as Bryant demanded to be traded after a disappointing end to the ’06-’07 season. Despite the Lakers preseason troubles, Bryant performed well and nurtured the team’s cohesiveness and chemistry. Since then, Kobe Bryant has been playing the best basketball of his career averaging over twenty eight points, six rebounds, and five assists. The 2007-2008 season has solidified Bryant as not only the most prolific scorer in the NBA, but also as a great teammate and leader. Kobe’s all around game this season has garnered MVP chants from basketball cities across the nation, making him a serious contender for the MVP award. With Derek Fisher’s added support and mentorship at the point guard position, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers have a relatively young team focused and prepared for an exciting playoff run.
The L.A. Lakers have all the necessary tools in a hall of fame coach, a superstar and willing role players, to become serious contenders for an NBA championship.
