A Brief Information about Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Built in 1909 as an automobile proving ground, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built as a 2.5-mile rectangle by its four founders because that was the largest track that could be constructed on the land available.
The first event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a hot-air balloon race, followed by three days of racing in August of 1909. However, the crushed stone and tar track was so dangerous; work began immediately on repaving the entire surface with more than three million bricks.
The track and grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway deteriorated badly during World War II and plans were made to replace it with residential housing. However, a business man from Terre Haute named Tony Hulman stepped in, purchased the speedway, and began a series of improvements to the facility that continues to this day.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, currently the only such landmark to be affiliated with automotive history since its inception. To date, 221 automobile races between August 19, 1909 and August 6, 2005 have been held, with 121 separate drivers winning.
