Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back in Victory Lane with a win at the Crown Royal 400. Coming off the worst season of his career, Earnhardt ended a 27-race winless streak at Richmond International Raceway with a victory that proves just how far his team has come since missing the Chase for the Nextel Cup last year.
He celebrated his 17th career Nextel Cup victory and third at Richmond with perfect doughnuts along the frontstetch, spinning his No. 8 Chevrolet until it was engulfed in thick, white smoke and one of his tires had exploded. The win at the Crown Royal 400 is his first since winning the USG Sheetrock 400 in the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.
The win at the USG Sheetrock 400 was the lone highlight in a season of turmoil: He finished 19th in the final standings and was never a contender.
Earnhardt was reunited though with crew chief Tony Eury Jr. this season, and the two had made quiet strides with a handful of solid finishes this season.
The win at the Crown Royal 400 moved him up two spots in the standings to sixth. He trails leader Jimmie Johnson by 216 points.
