A Brief Information about Budweiser Shootout NASCAR Racing
The Budweiser Shootout is an annual NASCAR Nextel Cup Series event held at Daytona International Speedway in February, the week before the Daytona 500. It began as the Busch Clash and was a fifty-mile "shootout". In its current format, it is made up of 2 segments: First a short 20-lap segment, followed by a 10 minute intermission. After the intermission, the race concludes with a 50-lap segment in which each car must make a green flag pit stop.
The race, like the Nextel All-Star Challenge held at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May, carries no points for the winner but rather a large purse, circumstances that are supposed to encourage an all-out driving style not seen in regular-season races, where one serious mistake can largely ruin a season. However, due to the smaller fields, huge accidents normally seen in the Daytona 500 are uncommon. The smaller field consists of all of the pole winners from the previous season as well as past winners of this race. The starting lineup is determined by a random draw, not by qualifying, as all other point races are determined.
In this year's 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup Season, rookie Denny Hamlin, driver for NFL Head Coach Joe Gibbs' team, won the 2006 Budweiser Shootout at the Daytona International Speedway. Hamlin brought immediate respectability to the FedEx outfit in a 2005 late-season audition, putting a team struggling to qualify for races in the top 10 three times over the last seven races. In a qualifying performance that set the stage for future heroics, he won the pole position at Phoenix in November.
The performance earned his team a bid into the invitation-only Budweiser Shootout, which is traditionally the first major event leading up to the Daytona 500. Hamlin charged to the front and held off a late challenge from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate and two-time NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart to pull off arguably the biggest upset in the history of the race.
