The Aaron's 499 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race held at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama. The race has always been held in early May or late April. The Aaron's 499 is also one of four races currently run with restrictor plates, the others being the UAW-Ford 500, the Pepsi 400, and the Daytona 500.
In the last Aaron’s 499 though, NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson grabbed the checkered flag despite his history at Talladega Superspeedway. Critics would say Johnson would be too aggressive at times and too patient at Talladega. Dale Earnhardt Jr. even called him an “idiot” for causing a crash last season that involved 39 cars.
Johnson erased a career full of Talladega troubles, barreling past teammate Brian Vickers with one lap to go and holding off a charge from Tony Stewart to win the rain-postponed Aaron's 499.
"I got into some situations last year, and I just felt in my heart that maybe I was being too aggressive on the track," Johnson said. "I really just stayed cautious. I didn't want to be aggressive. I didn't want to block anybody. And then at the end, got really aggressive and raced for the win," he said.
The win at the Aaron’s 499 made Johnson 2-for-2 in restrictor plate races thus far with his other win coming in the beginning of the season at the Daytona 500.
