Royals Information
1969-79 The Kansas City Royals were purchased as an expansion franchise by Ewing Kauffman and joined the Major Leagues in 1969. Beautiful Royals Stadium opened in 1973 and hosted that year's All-Star Game. Kansas City developed young players such as George Brett, Frank White, and Dennis Leonard and acquired mainstays in Paul Splittorff, Hal McRae, and Amos Otis via trade. The Royals reaped the benefits and became an instant success, winning three American League titles in 1976, 1977, and 1978.
1980-89 The Royals reached the top of baseball with a trip to their first World Series in 1980 and the organization's first World Championship in 1985. Kansas City also followed George Brett's chase of the .400 mark, three playoff berths, and numerous pennant chases and All-Star selections. Bo Jackson, Bret Saberhagen, Mark Gubicza, and Kevin Seitzer emerged as Kansas City's new wave of stars in the 1980s
1990-99 Royals fans saw the end of their legends' careers close. George Brett won his third batting title and broke the 3,000-hit barrier before retiring in 1993. Frank White retired after winning eight Gold Gloves, while Willie Wilson's career concluded as the Royals' stolen base king. Kansas City also mourned the losses of Ewing and Muriel Kauffman and legendary reliever Dan Quisenberry during the decade. However, Kansas City celebrated the induction of Brett into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1999 and developed future stars in Mike Sweeney, Jermaine Dye, and 1999 Rookie of the Year Carlos Beltran.
2000-01 Kansas City ushered in a new era with David Glass taking over ownership in May of 2000. On the field, the Royals set a team record for the most runs scored in a season behind a new generation of stars. Mike Sweeney broke the team RBI mark. Jermaine Dye won a Gold Glove in right field.
