Ratdog 1rst coalesced when Weir & Wasserman - who had been playing together since 1988 - added Charlie Hunter Trio drummer Jay Lane in 1994. He was followed a year later by legendary blues pianist Johnnie Johnson & harmonica player Matthew Kelly, accomplished musicians, but who ultimately didn’t fit in with Weir’s vision. As one of the members of the Grateful Dead, Weir was playing close to 100 shows a year, but he needed more music in his life. The result was 1rst a burgeoning solo career of albums ("Ace," "Heaven Help the Fool"), a side band, "Bobby and the Midnites," & then an ongoing partnership with bassist extraordinaire Rob Wasserman. Wasserman started his career with studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and then began to work with artists like Van Morrison, David Grisman, & eventually Lou Reed. He also pursued an extremely distinguished solo recording career with "Solo," "Duets", & "Trios".
Ratdog played their 1rst show on 22 April 1995 which consisted of; Bob Weir (guitar, vocals), Rob Wasserman (bass) Jay Lane (drums) & Matt Kelly (guitar). After the Grateful Dead's official passing in December 1995, brought on by the passing of member Jerry Garcia on August 9 th, 1995, Bob Weir continued touring with a host of top notch musicians. In an effort to move away from the blues style, Ratdog brought in hard/bop saxophonist Dave Ellis, & replaced Johnson with Jeff Chimenti. With Wasserman on upright bass, Chimenti on keyboards, Lane beating on the drums & Ellis playing on saxophone, Ratdog began to sound more like a jazz ensemble. Weir made a few final tweaks, adding more color sounds with Mark Karan on lead guitar & replacing Ellis with the Bay area sax player Kenny Brooks.
