Lewis Black Bio.

Lewis Black the playwright, actor, stand-up comic, & a commentator for Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show. With subversive wit & intellectual honesty, Lewis examines the events of his life that shaped his point of view & developed his comedic perspective. Lewis Black was born & raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. Growing up in 1950s suburbia father knew best, and Lewis began to regard authority with a jaundiced eye at a young age. And as that sentiment grew with each passing year, so did his ability to hone in on the absurd.

Lewis was exposed to playwriting as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned a Masters in Fine Arts at the Yale School in 1977. Black originally as a playwright, has written over 40 plays besides serving as the playwright in residence & associate artistic director of a Hell's Kitchen theater bar & restaurant on 42nd Street in New York City from 1981 to 1989.

Black's stand/up comedy began as an opening act for the plays as he was also the master of ceremonies. After a management change at the theater, Black left & began working as a comedian as well as finding bit parts in television & films.

Lewis has been described as having the heart of a liberal & with the mouth of a shock-jock. But his comic rants are targeted at anyone he finds deserving. Winner of the 2001 American Comedy Awards, Lewis's comedy is angry & frenetic. Black is called a political comedian, no subject is out of reach for this guy. His material is always funny & fresh, a favorite on Comedy Central's Daily Show and in comedy clubs across the United States.
