Bonnie Raitt Bio.
Singer/guitarist Bonnie Raitt did not begin to win the comparable commercial success due her until the release of the appropriately titled Nick of Time; her 10th album, it rocketed Raitt into the mainstream consciousness nearly 2 decades after Raitt 1rst committed her unique blend of blues, rock, and R&B to vinyl.
Born on November 8, 1949, in Burbank, CA, she was the daughter of Broadway star John Raitt, best known for his starring performances in such smashes as Carousel and Pajama Game. After picking up the guitar at the age of 12, Bonnie felt an immediate affinity for the blues, and although Raitt went off to attend Radcliffe in 1967, within 2 years Bonnie had dropped out to begin playing the Boston folk & blues club circuit. Signing with noted blues manager Dick Waterman, Bonnie was soon performing alongside idols that included Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Sippie Wallace and in time earned such a strong reputation that she was signed to Warner Bros Records.
In 1971 with a self titled effort, Bonnie immediately emerged as a critical favorite, not only for her soulful vocals & thoughtful song selection but also for her guitar style, turning heads as one of the few women to play bottleneck with skills. Raitt’s follow/up, Give It Up (1972), made better use of her eclectic tastes, feat. material by Eric Kaz & Jackson Browne, in addition to a number of R&B chestnuts and even 3 Raitt originals. Takin' My Time (1973) was much acclaimed, and throughout the middle of the decade Raitt released an LP annually, Streetlights (1974) & Home Plate a year later. With Sweet Forgiveness (1977), Bonnie scored her 1rst significant pop airplay with her hit cover of the Del Shannon classic "Runaway"; its follow/up, The Glow (1979'), appeared around the same time as a massive all-star anti/nuclear concert at New York - Madison Square Garden mounted by MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), an organization Raitt co-founded earlier.
