Walt Disney Concert Hall Facts and Information
As the 4 th hall to be added to the bustling Los Angeles Music Center , the Walt Disney Concert Hall took more than a quarter billion dollars to construct, and required four years until completion. At $274 million, this concert hall is just as dazzling as the other products of its namesake. Designed by Frank Gehry, the acoustics are astounding.
Beginning in 1987, Lillian Disney, wife of the late Walt Disney, donated the first $50 million towards building the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Almost half of the costs incurred were for the parking garage alone, which was paid for by the County of Los Angeles . For two years construction stalled while hopes for more funding to finish the project soared.
The County of Los Angeles found themselves in a real catch-22, needing money from the Concert Hall to finish it, and yet needing to finish it to bring in more money. Finally, by 2003 when it opened, the Disney family and the Walt Disney Company had contributed a total of $110 million, the city had put up the same, and the rest came from private donations.
Today the incredible venue, home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has walls and ceilings complete with Douglas-fir, and the floor is finished with oak. It includes a massive organ with 72 stops, 109 ranks, and 6,125 pipes.
The Walt Disney Concert Hall shares the Los Angeles Music Center with the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Ahmanson Theatre, and the Mark Taper Forum, and also houses the restaurant Patina, run by celebrity-chef Joachim Splichal, and serves California and French fare.
