UCLA Tennis Center Facts and Information
Formerly called the Sunset Canyon Courts, The UCLA Los Angeles Tennis Center (LATC) is part of the UCLA Campus, between the Pauley Pavilion and Drake Stadium. Both the men's and women's UCLA tennis teams share the facility and call it home.
On May 20, 1984, the UCLA Tennis Center opened for the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, followed by the 1984 Olympic Tennis competitions. Today the Women's NCAA is still held there, and in addition to that, the Men's NCAA Tennis Championships are also now held there. The LATC hosts the Pacific Southwest Open and the Countrywide Classic, a part of the ATP Tennis Tour, as well.
The Los Angeles Tennis Center itself has eight tennis courts and can accommodate 10,000 spectators when all the stands are full. The center court is called the Times-Mirror Center Court . The stadium is named the Straus Stadium and Clubhouse, named for the former chairman of Thrifty Drugs, Leonard Straus. The entire venue is complemented by the Johnny Carson Drawboard and the Union 76 Scoreboard.
Every single year, the UCLA Tennis Center puts on the Spring Sing, a UCLA student talent show. This is where the George and Ira Gershwin Award are also given. Some of the past winners have included Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, and Lionel Richie, to name a few.
The UCLA Los Angeles Tennis Court is a fun and exciting venue to visit. UCLA campus has an exuberant energy that spills onto the tennis courts.
