What was once Home Depot Center is now the Stubhub Center
Home of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA, StubHub Center is the largest soccer-specific stadium in the MLS (Major League Soccer). The stadium is located in Carson, ten miles south of downtown Los Angeles on the campus of California State Univeristy, Domingquez Hills. The stadium is owned and operate by AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) and has a capacity of 27,000. Formerly known as the Home Depot Center, the stadium officially became known as the StubHub Center on June 1, 2013.
With a cost of $150 million to design and construct, the stadium opened in June 2003 as the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy. The opening Galaxy game included appearances by many famous people from the world of soccer including Brazilian legend Pele. With the creation of Chivas USA as an MLS expansion team in 2004 StubHub Center became the home to a second MLS club. The stadium has two different configurations for the Galaxy (capacity of 27,000) and Chivas (18,800). In addition to serving as a training facility and site for many national soccer team matches, the stadium hosted the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup final, the 2003 MLS All-Star Game and the MLS Cup five times, the most in MLS history. The decade-long success of the Galaxy under Bruce Arena, featuring Landon Donovan and David Beckham has seen t he Galaxy win the last two MLS Cups on their home field, with victories over the Houston Dynamo both years.
Although soccer is the main attraction, the stadium also hosts a variety of other events including the first three editions of the USA Sevens, an annual rugby competition that is part of the IRB Sevens World Series. The stadium is also the location for the State Championship Bowl Games for California High School football. Fans of the reality show Pros vs. Joes may also recognize the stadium as the site where the show was filmed during its two seasons. The StubHub Center also features a cycling velodrome, a 8000 seat tennis stadium and a track and field facility that can expand to 20,000 sets. The track hosted the 2005 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In addition to the amateur and professional events that take place at the StubHub Center, the complex also features tennis courts, soccer training fields and a three-mile jogging trail with twelve fitness stations. These amenities are available for local residents in the spirit of, according to AEG, "building character through competition."
