Andrea Bocelli was born September 22, 1958 in Tuscany , Italy . Born with poor eyesight, Bocelli was legally blind by the age of twelve after a soccer mishap. Bocelli began playing the piano at the age of six and it is rumored his mother claims music was the only thing that would comfort him. Bocelli also learned to play the guitar, harp, flute, drums, trombone, trumpet, and saxophone. By the age of fourteen Andrea Bocelli won his first singing competition, the Margherita d'Oro in Viareggio . After finishing high school Bocelli enrolled at the University of Pisa . To earn money he would play piano at bars. He completed law school and for one year was a court-appointed lawyer. It was there that he met his wife Enrica. He did not release his first album for nearly two decades after that. Releasing his first album in 1994, Andrea Bocelli has released a total of fourteen studio albums, eight Opera recordings, two compilation albums, and countless singles and live albums and videos. To date Andrea Bocelli has won ten World Music Awards, three Grammy's, nine Classical BRIT Awards, and dozens of other awards and achievements. Andrea Bocelli has been gifted with the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in Rome, has been made a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez, and Mella by the President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez and has also been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to live theater.
