The Beach Boys are the epitome of American rock music. Brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, along with their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, formed the band in high school. Founder Brian Wilson had an obsession with harmonies growing up in Hawthorne , CA . Given a reel-to-reel tape recorder, Wilson learned to overdub. He subsequently taught his brothers and cousin how to harmonize along with their friend and soon The Beach Boys was born. The Beach Boys began rehearsing in the family living room and performing at talent competitions. With rented instruments the Beach Boys practiced for three days to audition for the Stereo Masters in Hollywood , CA . They recorded their first single Surfin' and released the song in November of 1961. The Beach Boys first gig was New Years Eve 1961 playing at the Ritchie Valens Memorial Dance in Long Beach, CA. Since then the Beach Boys have released an astounding library of records, numbering thirty with their thirty-first album expected to release in 2012.

The Beach Boys have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and they have been awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The Beach Boys have long been performing without Brian Wilson, who not long into the career of The Beach Boys began experiencing anxiety attacks and decided to remain a member of the band only to write and produce. In late 2010 reports began to circulate that the Beach Boys would reunite for a 50 th Anniversary album. Finally at the end of 2011 it was announced that The Beach Boys would be reuniting for a 2012 50 th Anniversary Beach Boys reunion. The Beach Boys performed at the 2012 Grammy Awards and it was their first time on stage together in years.
