Pink Martini Information
Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band & Japanese film noir is the 12/piece Pink Martini.
Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland, Oregon/based ‘little orchestra’ was created in 1994 in Portland, Oregon by Harvard graduate & classically trained pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale & China Forbes. The next year, they selected the same campus house and often found themselves at the house piano, where Lauderdale would play and Forbes would sing late into the night as a distraction from studies. A few years after graduation, the two re-connected in Portland, Ore., to form Pink Martini. The band began playing at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, clean water, & public broadcasting. The group made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival & in the years following went on to tour throughout Europe, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland & Monte Carlo), Greece, Turkey, Taiwan, Lebanon & the United States. Equally at home performing its multi-lingual repertoire on concert stages & smoky bars, Pink Martini draws a wildly diverse crowd. Sympathique , Pink Martini’s wildly popular debut album was independently released on the band’s own label, Heinz Records in 1997. It has gone on to sell 650,000 copies worldwide & has taken the band around the world on tours to the Cannes Film Festival, Lebanon, Turkey & Taiwan among other far flung destinations. Nominated for “Best New Artist” & “Song of the Year” in France’s Victories de la Musique awards, Sympathique went Gold in Greece & Platinum in France. The ensemble made its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra in 1999 under the direction of Norman Leyden. Songs from Sympathique appear on many music compilations including Buddha Bar, Hotel Costes, West Elm, Façonnable, Putumayo, Nordstrom, Williams Sonoma, Starbucks/Hear Music & in various films such as Josie & the Pussycats, In the Cut, & Nurse Betty & have been used on television shows such as The West Wing & The Sopranos, among many others. Pink Martini has also performed with the symphony orchestras of New Jersey, Charlotte, Seattle, Nashville, Kansas City, San Antonio & Jacksonville, among others. The group has performed for 3 nights with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in 2000 & also 2 nights with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on a co/bill with Sergio Mendes at the Hollywood Bowl in 2002.
In October 2003, Pink Martini performed at the grand opening of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s new Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Later they were invited back to play 2 more sold/out performances for the hall's 1rst New Year’s Eve celebration in 2003. Other appearances include the Kennedy Center, the opening of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas & the William Morris Agency’s 100th birthday celebration feat. Soul legend, Al Green. Pink Martini’s long awaited 2nd album “Hang on Little Tomato”, feat. mostly original songs written by the band & its extended family. Drawing on themes articulated in its 1rst album, Hang on Little Tomato is the result of the group's diverse collaborations & inspirations.
