The Phantom of the Opera Synopsis
The legendary musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' is coming to Los Angeles . The musical and operetta by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the novel by French novelist Gaston Leroux. All the music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe.
It opened at Her Majesty's Theatre in London on October 9, 1986, where it celebrated its astounding 9,000th performance on May 31, 2008 and became the second longest running musical in the West End , behind Les Miserables. It also holds the distinction of being the longest running Broadway musical of all time, breaking the previous record held by Lloyd Webber's 'Cats'. Ironically, the 'Phantom' suffered early negative reviews. 'The Phantom of the Opera' has been seen in 124 cities in 25 countries and has played to over 100 million people. There have been productions in hundreds of cities and in more than 20 countries around the world, including the UK, US, New Zealand, Japan, Austria, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Korea, Denmark, Spain and Russia. It is the highest-grossing entertainment event of all time with total worldwide box office takings of over $3.2 billion which means that over 80 million people have seen 'Phantom' on stage.
The New York production alone has grossed $600 million, which made it the most financially successful Broadway show in history. Besides breaking records all over the world, 'Phantom' has also been the critics darling. The show has won over 50 major awards including 3 Olivier Awards, Audience Award for Most Popular Show, an Evening Standard Award, 7 Drama Desk Awards and 3 Outer Critic Circle Awards, and 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical
'Phantom' focuses on the gorgeous singer, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, masked, disfigured musical genius known as "The Phantom of the Opera," who terrorizes the Paris Opera House. Christine Daae was brought up in the Paris Opera house when her famous father, a musician, suddenly dies, and he tells her that he will send her and angel of music to look after her. She grows up and discovers that she is hearing a voice which tells her and teaches her to sing. She believes he is the angel of music that her father has sent but in fact he is a disfigured genius, the phantom. He falls in love with her and although she is fascinated with the phantom, she falls in love with her childhood sweetheart, Raoul. Insanely jealous, the phantom kidnaps Christine, and threatens to kill Raoul.
To save Raoul, Christine agrees to marry the phantom. He then realizes what he's done and then makes Christine back to Raoul and disappears forever. The success of the 'Phantom of the Opera' is unparallel and any lover of the theater must see it at least once.
