What is ONCE about?
For those of you that like musicals with romantic undertones, this production of "Once" is clearly going to be for you. In fact, the characters are basically discovering their love for each other through the music that they create. Besides being a love story though, it is also a personal journey of self discovery for the characters as well. Once won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 2012. It was originally an Irish movie of the musical genre that was made in 2006. If you are a fan of the movie, then you haven't seen anything yet because the live performances of this production are more superb than the on-screen ones. This production was directed by John Tiffany and is based on the book by author Enda Walsh. The wonderful songs are done by Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard.

A musical like this can only be done right when you have talented actors and musicians performing the dialogue and lyrics. This production was led by Dani De Waal and Stuart Ward. They each bring something unique to the characters they are portraying, which easily gets picked up on by the audience within the first 20 minutes. The characters mutual love for music is what brings them together; however, what really elevates the play is the brilliant choreography by Steven Hoggett. The movements of the characters are hypnotic, which seems to actually push them towards their unknown destinies. The only downside is that it does not have such a happy ending. Some people may find this to be a downside, while others may like the fact that it is an honest ending. We live in an age where audiences prefer to see stories that involve honesty rather than overbeat happy endings that are unrealistic.

You may think that this is just a "girl" friendly story, but it is actually entertaining for both men and women. But certainly, if you are a guy that is trying to impress a girl then there is no better way than to take her to see this production. The mixture of instrumental music, singing and live dancing will surely keep everyone's eyes glued to the stage. The story does involve a lot of Irish themes and stereotypes, like drinking, so if that turns you off then you may not like the story. However, you should at least give it a chance because the moral of the story is very strong. By: Chris M
