Flashdance The Musical is a stageplay adaptation of the 1983 movie, Flashdance and in fact is penned by the same writer, Tom Hedley. The story is about Alex, who is a poor girl from a working-class neighborhood in Pittsburgh , USA . She is stuck in a day-job as an apprentice welder and to make extra cash, Alex is a stripper at night. While Alex may be short on cash, she is big on talent and inspiration. She has dreams of getting out of this mining town and she plans to do it by dancing out of there. Obsessed with earning a spot at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy , Alex trains relentlessly toward this goal. Along the way Alex falls in love with Nick, who is of course the boss' son. Nick has his own character arc as he experiences the typical self-entitlement of some of the more fortunate youth, yet he learns to appreciate the lives that his father's employees are struggling through.
The Flashdance Musical production is a brilliant homage to the movie. With 20 champion dancers, world-class choreography and of course an excellent score, Flashdance The Musical is a delight for all ages. The beloved Oscar-winning song “Flashdance – What a Feeling” is complimented by fan-favorite original songs from the Flashdance movie including “I Love Rock ‘n' Roll,” “Maniac” and “Gloria,” along with 16 original songs. The dancing ranges from break dancing to ballet to jazz, Latin and street dancing and is seamlessly weaved into this classic story in an excellent stage set design. The story takes you into Alex's welding job, to her dance studio, to her strip club job, her walks down the Pittsburgh streets and most importantly, Alex's audition for the Shipley Dance Academy . Flashdance The Musical is a well-rounded, full production that brings all of the elements of the Flashdance movie and more of its own, especially for the live stage performance.
