Original boy-band New Edition has been around since 1978. For nineteen years New Edition, spearheaded by Bobby Brown, toured and recorded all over the globe. They are considered the original mold for the boy band model as we know it. Music producer Maurice Starr took Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, and Ricky Bell under his wing, all of whom lived in the projects in Boston . Initially New Edition performed in Massachusetts . They eventually won first spot in a talent show, winning $500.00 and a recording contract. They came in second place but that had little bearing on their hit debut album, Candy Girl. The album released four No. 1 hits on both American R&B Singles Charts and UK Singles Charts. Mismanaged by Starr, who issued checks for $1.87 citing tour budgets and expenses as swallowing their paychecks, New Edition left Starr in 1984. Starr went on to form New Kids on the Block. Meanwhile New Edition didn't let up their efforts. They hired a law firm and sued their record label. Not ling after New Edition got their big break with an MCA recording deal that was heightened by a bidding war amongst all major labels.
New Edition saw the departure of Bobby Brown in 1986. He was voted out due to behavioral problems. Brown pursued a solo career and a high-profile relationship with then No. 1 star Whitney Houston, who dominated the eighties R&B scene. Bobby Brown would not return until the groups reunion, first in 1996 and then again in 2006. He is now scheduled to tour with New Edition as a part of their 2012 efforts. In 2008 New Edition members Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill began touring under the name, Heads of State. They are now back touring under the name New Edition with other former members. For almost a year there have also been talks of a New Edition/New Kids on the Block co-headlined, co-reunited tour.
