Leonard Cohen Facts and Information:
Leonard Cohen was born September 21, 1934. This Canadian musician has been inspiring fans for more than half a century and has been inducted into both the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He was finally inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of 2008. Leonard Cohen also bears the honor of being a Companion of the Order of Canada .
Born in Montreal , Leonard was fatherless at nine years old. Raised by his widowed mother, he studied poetry and learned the guitar growing up. In high school he was a part of a country-folk band and utilized his father's trust fund to forward his musical interests
During his twenties, Leonard Cohen focused primarily on poetry, publishing five poetry collections during that time. It was during the sixties that he really pushed his music, and between 1967 and 1992 he released nine studio albums. It was during that time that Cohen famously retreated to the Mount Baldy Zen Centre for five years, becoming ordained as a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk, even going so far as to take the Dharma name "Jikan", for silence. His Dharma name seems like an ironic contrast to so many years of expressing himself in both the written and the spoken word. After his stint at the monastery, Cohen has since released two more albums.
Today Leonard Cohen stands as one of the most respected artists in music. With so many years under his belt, and a relentless drive to keep creating music and evolving as a person, Leonard has withstood many different tests of time.
