Dream Theater was founded in 1985 by three young students attending Berklee College of Music. John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy all soon dropped out of school to concentrate their efforts on the band, at the time called Majesty. They began their career covering other eighties metal and rock bands such as Rush and Iron Maiden. Along with the three original founding members, James LaBrie and Jordon Rudess all remained together until September 8, 2010 when Portnoy left the band.
During the course of their career Dream Theater became well known for their technical proficiency of their instruments and has won countless awards from music instruction magazines. John Petrucci is the third player on the G3 tour six times; more than any other player. In 2009 he was named the No. 2 metal guitarist. He has been named one of the Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time by GuitarOne Magazine. Mike Portnoy also won awards for his time as a drummer, winning twenty-three awards total from Modern Drummer Magazine. He is the second youngest person to be inducted into the Rock Drummer Hall of Fame, when he was just 37. Portnoy's replacement Mike Mangini has set five World's Fastest Drummer Extreme Sport Drumming records. John Myung has been voted the greatest bassist of all time in a poll held by MusicRadar.
