Andre Leon Marie Nicolas Rieu, born October 1, 1949, is a nationally acclaimed conductor and violinist. Born in the Netherlands , Andre Rieu began learning the violin by the time he was just five years old. Like his father, he quickly became mesmerized with the world of conducting.
At the age of nineteen, Andre Rieu enrolled at the Conservatorium Maastricht where he studied violin for five years. Prior to that, Mr. Rieu attended the Conservatoire Royal. After graduating from Maastricht , Andre Rieu moved to Brussels to attend the Music Academy , where he won the Premier Prix award.
Since Andre Rieu began his career as a professional violinist, he has performed in theatres across the world. In 1987 Andre Rieu founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra, along with his personal production company. Initially the orchestra performed with just twelve members, but has since grown to a usual range of 40 to 50 musicians. They have traveled in Europe, Japan, and North America and have earned two World Music Awards, have gone eight times platinum in the Netherlands, and for the first time Andre Rieu performed solo in 2007 in Australia.
