Los Angeles City Information:

The history of Los Angeles County started in the San Gabriel Valley in September of 1771 when Father Junipero Serra and a group of Spaniards established the San Gabriel Mission as the center of the initial community in an area occupied by small bands of Gabrielino Indians.

On September 1781, the Pobladores, a group of 12 relations - 46 men, women and children from the San Gabriel Mission guided by Captain Rivera y Moncada - recognized a community in what is now known as the City of Los Angeles. They called it El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula, after a close river. In September of 1797, the Franciscan monks formed the San Fernando Mission Rey de Espana in the northern San Fernando Valley.

los angelesCalifornia was ruled by Spain until 1822 when Mexico assumed authority. After a two-year period of fighting with Mexico starting in 1846, the area came under United States control. In 1848 the agreement of Guadalupe Hidalgo made California a United States region. The County of Los Angeles was recognized on February 18, 1850 as one of the 27 original counties, numerous months before California was declared to the Union.

Nowadays, Los Angeles County has 88 cities and more than 140 unincorporated districts. The first city, included on April 4, 1850, was the City of Los Angeles, which was chosen as the official seat of County government. In 1886 Pasadena and Santa Monica were created. Monrovia turned out to be the fourth Los Angeles city in 1887; followed by Pomona, Long Beach, South Pasadena, and Compton. In 1892, Redondo Beach turned to be a city, as did Whittier and Azusa in 1898. The newest additions to the Los Angeles County were Santa Clarita in 1987, Diamond Bar in 1989, and Malibu and Calabasas.

On April 1850, the people of Los Angeles County declared their recently won right of self-government and selected a three-man Court of Sessions as their first governing body. A total of 377 votes were cast in the election. In 1852 the Legislature dissolved the Court of Sessions and shaped a five-member Board of Supervisors. In 1913 the citizens of Los Angeles County established a charter recommended by a board of freeholders that gave the Los Angeles County superior freedom to govern itself within the framework of state law.

Downtown Los Angeles is the home to one of the most stunning historical movie theatres in the state, the Los Angeles Theatre. It was built at a cost of more than one million dollars in 1931.
